Hmm depends how much u value box and papers.. If condition is not far off and buy to keep, i will get w paper.

Agree.

But for me if I wanna keep (like commemorating some special day etc) i will buy brand new from AD.
If buy preowned I will ignore box and papers just go for lowest price.

Thanks for the reply yatto, unfortunately the model I'm looking for is a discontinued model, sometime in the early 2000s. I should have been clearer earlier.

I'm pretty much looking for a 2nd hand shop, preferably with tie ins with other shops overseas.

I owned one many many many many years ago while I was still schooling, typical quality leather strap, on par with those paros strap being sold in most places now. If it's your only watch for daily wear, and u steer clear of water? Mine lasted for 2 years..

y solvil titus price can from $400 to few thosuands also. anyone knows how to tell e differences? this brand good? or seiko better with the same pricing.

Any experts on this brand? I suspect they use Chinese and Japanese movements and assemble/case the watches in China and Hong Kong....
So I would prefer Seiko over sovil, at least I know exactly what I am buying...

I also prefer the date function. Tear coupons sign documents everything look at your wrist, much easier than digging out the handphone.

As for the chronograph function, its really hardly used. Thats also one reason I sold my daytona. I probably wont be getting any watches with chrono functions again too.

I'm tending more towards the exp 1. It appeals to me more being a watch u can wear casual and sporty - just swap between strap and bracelet.

As for the vacheron, u can try the MBS boutique.

The ocbc dickson promotion I guess they wun give u any discount on even the first piece...?

imo, the watch one wears projects the mood/image one is in/wishes to share.

for eg, daytonas or any chronographs with tachymeter scale associates itself with racing, and if i'm behind the wheel of an aventador, 458 spider, sl63 amg, porsche 911, bmw m6, audi r8, lexus lfa, nissan gtr, etc, wearing an appropriate chrono keeps with mood and spirit of the moment (especially if there're red hands on all the subdials and central seconds hand! ).

a vintage style/inspired watch identifies the owner as being one whose is enamoured by the period/activities which produced those designs. eg. wwII german b-uhr pilot observation watches, vintage/military diving watches from blancpain, panerai, etc, jlc reverso that captures the spirit of art deco period of the 20s/30s, a vulcain cricket/jlc memovox mechanical alarm/universal tri-compax/tissot visodate/hamilton intra-matic that captures the spirit of the 50s/60s when men wear hats and women wear gloves a la breakfast at tiffany's (when men were men and women wear skirts & aprons & stay in the kitchen), heuer autavia/tudor monte carlo/heuer monaco/rolex daytona harkens to the heady racing days of late 60s/early 70s when guts count for more than safety, ap ro/pp nautilus redefining the luxury steel watch in the 70s, etc.

a flightmaster/pilot/aviator watch with a rotatable sliderule conversion tables on the rehaut/chapter ring/bezel are either for real pilots, wannabes or screams GEEK!

a luxury diver projects an image of toughness, adventure, daring-do and ability to function under pressure.

a solid gold watch projects success, having arrived & makes a strong statement about the business acumen of the owner.

a diamond studded watch screams "i'm wearing jewellery that happens to tell the time (unless even that is obscured by a diamond filled dial that's so dazzling that it blinds the eyes ... so so bling it on! look at my owner!"

a slim, solid gold (be it yellow, rose or white) dress watch on a leather strap projects an elegant, sophisticated & cultured image of a gentleman with sober taste and finess.

a tourbillion, minute repeater, moonphase, perpetual calender, rattrapante chronograph with/without open workings and a generous sapphire crystal exhibition caseback just says: "i'm the king of the world!"

hmmm... i rather go for the newer offerings, not so much for the maxi dial or supersized case, but more for the superior parachrome spring and excellent bracelet that finally (!) matches the watch in terms of quality.

the older bracelet just feels cheap and nasty - like some stamped metal afterthought.

box is dim deh and is always factored into the cost of the watch if sold at 2nd hand dealers. nice to have but not necessary.

hard core collectors will usually store their automatic watches in a winder anyway.

but to me papers, receipt, guarantee card (even if expired) are important as evidence of proper ownership and lends credibility & authenticity. of course nothing beats a verification at the respective service centres.

battery powered watches should learn the lesson of the original battery powered bulova accutron which features the fascinating tuning fork technology but ultimately got bested by quartz.

the non-standard battery that powers it is no longer produced and fitting a current one in mis-matches the design voltage, leading to inaccurate timekeeping.

The older "hollow" bracelet feels too light and don't give the solid feel compared to even some of the cheaper watches in the market.

The date function is really more convenient.
There is no one rule that fits all.
