Hi guys, I've been struggling to decide which of these watches to get for quite a while now and would like to hear your opinions.

watch3s.jpg

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic Ref 42042

ss2.jpg

Jaegar-LeCoultre Master Calendar

My preference is to get a used watch, so the Master Calendar is about 1-2k more expensive than the Overseas Automatic. I'm planning to use it as my staple watch, in rotation with a Solvil et Titus my wife got me when I first started work. Nothing can beat its sentimental value. :D What do you guys recommend?

sorry to burst your bubble but I've always felt the VC overseas look nothing special. Or perhaps it looks better on your wrist than mine?

JLC looks nicer. but then again, pictures are one thing and how it looks on your wrist is another.

quite interesting you are comparing a sports watch with a dress watch?

Not in depth to these 2 brands but on view, the VC is my preference. I like simple yet elegant looks. ;):o

Thanks for your comment yatto, I really value your input. Was the VC Overseas you tried the one with the Arabic numerals? I find that this older model with batons, and smaller at 37mm looks more elegant. However, I'm afraid I haven't had the pleasure of trying it out on my wrist since I don't know anyone who owns one or know of a 2nd-hand watch shop that has one in stock, so I've been contemplating getting it through Chrono24, risky as it may be. I don't suppose anyone here has one that I can molest?

I guess it's odd that I'm comparing a sports watch with a dress watch, but I find that this VC model is elegant enough to wear as a dress watch. I suspect that the fashion police might hunt me down for that comment haha.

I suspect that if I were to finally choose, I'd find myself regretting not getting the other. Obligatory meme post.

I can't really remember but I tried a VC overseas since it was next to the PP boutique.....and it just did not look good (to put it really badly, it looked cheap).

you really gotta try it out to know. like the recent explorer 1 craze that's happening in this thread - all the pics look so good. when I tried it on my hand it was disappointing for me. Didn't look as good as I expected, and I am just lacking something to pull it off. Same goes for ALS. And the 116520.

don't buy without trying. it is the ultimate test.

Yeah, that's really good advice. I guess I really should hunt for an Overseas 42042 to try, gonna be hard since it was discontinued in like 2003. I might actually be disappointed if I find that I can't pull it off. Did you feel the same with the ALS and the Daytona?

Bought my 16610 sub w/o trying but hard to go wrong with a black sub unless wrist is too small or large, and iwc portuguese chrono was a gift. Lucky both fit very well hehe

Never really heard of luxury watches being cheaper or a must buy in the US. But i nv research either.

Outside of watches, usual suspects are the outlet shopping and US brands eg gap, ralph lauren, brook brothers etc. U most prob nv want to buy these brands in sg again after u see the prices in US.

yeah really didn't suit me at all. tried a lot of ALS and none suit me well. the missus was with me and she shook her head immediately too.

Daytona as well. So much hype over it as it was very much sought after, and I thought it will look good on me too. ended up feeling very lost for a while but then realized that gold/white face looks good on me.

Fairly different watches actually. Overseas is spose to be sports watch (sports in the same light as AP RO or PP nautilus) whereas the master calendar is nearer a dress watch. I personally like the jlc master calendar vm but the 2013 version w/o power reserve.

Between the two above, I'll pick the JLC. :)
But if you are talking about the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine Date. I'll pick it over the JLC. It's simple, elegant and classy! :D

fabiaN said it best:

thanks bro... just saying what i feel...

sometimes, got $$ also doesn't mean will or must spend it on watches one mah.. some ppl save diligently on a monthly basis for a "dream watch"..

then when they have saved enough for it, they wonder if it's now worthwhile to spend it all on a watch... :o
