It's been a year since my last purchase of a Panerai 312 and now my hands are itchy again. Since my birthday is coming and to celebrate quitting my job, I want to get a new watch. General requirements are a black dial, leather strap (pref with deployment clasp), automatic/manual, and about 40mm is about right.

I have narrowed it down to either the Jaeger LeCoultre Master Hometime Aston Martin or Zenith Captain Power Reserve. What do you guys think? Comments or suggestions welcome!

For zenith, better to get the iconic el primero movement (ie a chronograph)?

For jlc, wont suggest collabs (for any brand for that matter). Most of the master series meet your requirement in size. Just a matter of budget, look n functions u like.

Can also consider GO, iwc portuguese, GP at around price range no more than 15k

For deployant clasp, not a deal breaker so long as the brand u looking for carries one (assuming u looking for original n not third party), u can change it (for a price of cos).

Coincidentally, these 2 brands are my first luxury brands purchased. Both are iconic with illustrious histories. But I agree with All In A Day, go with EP movement for Zenith and avoid cobrand for the JLC.

Good grief, I did not even realised there was the aston martin logo on the dial! You are right, I don't think I want a watch with a car logo on it. Thanks for pointing it out.

Budget wise, 10k is about right.

There is another JLC I am eyeing as well - the Master Chronograph. But generally I prefer a less busy dial, 1-2 subdials ok.

I wanted to get the El Primero for Zeniths but most of the sizes are 44mm which I realised is too big for my wrist. I love my Pam but my wrist aches and I tend to bump against things. Also, the EP dials are on the busy side. The only one I found with EP and is a 40mm size is this one (but a lot of things on the dial):
