For now the heirloom is probably the Patek and the missus' Rolex; and it seems like our son is more interested in watches. He would look at pictures of watches with me on the computer screen while our daughter prefers playing with cars.

but have you considered that for whatever reason your kids may not value a watch-heirloom as much as you? or if they feel compelled to just keep a $20K watch in the safe with no appreciation at all?

no heirloom watch for me. I'll pass on to them my knowledge and passion for watches and hopefully they take over the collection as a hobby :)

Yeah, I really agree a proper heirloom watch should be a real daily beater to inject love and bring attention to the kids, this is a very loved piece.

For watever reason, the watch is not valued or appreciated, at least I try my part to do something for the family before I pass on. :s8:

Definitely will not want them to feel compelled to keep the watch with no appreciation but to have it as an identity of the family root. :D

Been lurking in this thread for some time now, got poisoned by the bambino but ended up getting the esteem. Gonna get a SNZH soon too!

I will prefer to pass down a dress watch as I feel it is more suitable. Doesn't have to be expensive but suitable. (Cannot be a Camo G-Shock right? :s11:

My wife says it is too early to think about these things... :s22:
But I do it for the massive love for my family, since my late dad did not pass on any stuffs to us due to his sudden "Goodbye".

I wonder if any bros here has given a thought about this and will be planning to do so, can share your intended heirloom watch with us all? :D

Had that thought before... My elder boy notices the watches I wear and whether it's a new or old watch. The Pebble is his favorite!

A heirloom must be something meaningful and of certain quality. It must withstand the test of time (pun intended). Watch is a great idea. Probably get 2 Rolex for my boys when I have the money. :)

will let the rest of the bros decide their roles... for me, i am a slow and late bloomer for watchies...

in contemporary setting, perhaps 门徒 (the protege) setting is more apt? replace the powder with watches...

But rememberance need not be through something tangible. Proper upbringing with the right culture, learnings, skills cultivated and, dare I add, a sibling, will likely be of more value and your family root is definitely identifiable!

I had that in mind (passing on a 'heirloon')when I bought my first 'luxury' watch - a JLC. But I realise later that is just an object. I prefer to pass on my ability to help them enjoy what they want to do (eg. pay for lessons). So now they are learning gymnastics, horseback riding and (assuming I agree) one will also work for his PPL.
