Thanks for the pictures guys.. serious poisoning.

Personally i preferred the white dial version. the older model (40mm) seems to look more symetrical to me instead of the new model (42mm) which i find it a little too chunky. It seems a little more dressy, and less sporty. Most importantly, i like the subtle look. AND, i prefer the red hand, as compared to that orange hand.

That say, the new model does indeed cost more, and i don't think i am able to source for the a brand new previous model 16570 in any of the ADs now for a direct comparison.

Even famous 2nd hand retailers i see online are selling it at around high 5k and mid 6k, which seems to add on a premium as compared, to the original price when it was still available.

really have to get new? a lot of rolex users keep their watches really well, occasional watch, not a daily beater. like me

Roger Dubuis Savoir Faire dinner

Just came back from the above. Hosted by one of the few still-alive watchmakers: Monsieur Roger Dubuis himself!

Started off with molesting the watches at the boutique at MBS


Then attending the workshop at Artscience museum to learn how to polish a part of the tourbillon. simple stuff but meeting the man himself was great experience already. Even at the grand age of 80 his hands were still VERY stable in guiding us during the workshop.

Then we had dinner.....9pm...very hungry already!




Finally, everyone gets a diploma for completing the "course" and u get to bring home the part (forgot what it's called). Wife says she will use them for earrings.
(PAM305 to cover the name on the cert; not a door gift LOL)

Ahh. Anymore recommendations similar to the sinn 556a(similar to bell & ross 123 too.)

Else will just look around for grey sets or just hoot at THG

If you are getting the 556, remember to get it in bracelet. It will be cheaper to get a strap than to get a bracelet thereafter.

well, putting into consideration the potential servicing and replacement of part costs, it might be wiser imho to get a brand new one since one is already buying a luxury watch. The thing about 2nd hand watches or vintages is about the history of the watch. With the options of grey sellers, the trade off between bnib pieces should not differ too much from 2nd hand pieces.

you never know the person who used to wear the watch passed away, dropped the watch or had some financial trouble.. BUT that being said, one thing about these watches is that some of the patina is really gorgeous.

true but same for car, house etc. which collects more history of the owner user.

there are also LNIB "like new in box" or watches in very good condition, lightly used etc. I've gotten a great number of watches this way myself.

For the explorer II 16750 If you're going for new its going to be ~S$7K but if you're going for used its going to be ~S$5K quite a lot of savings. In fact in a sweet spot for Rolex watches, as after a while all used prices tend to go up following the regular price increases of the new ones.

He could only speak French so a translator was around. The same lady who conducted the workshop. He's very nice, the very grandpa feel. Went around to help us with our work, and with very steady hands for his age. No airs, and signed a lot of autographs for everyone who asked. A pity I couldn't speak french.

Wei Koh of Revolution was also at the dinner and boy, he was one helluva funny guy! I was seated near him and the jokes he made cracked me up non-stop.

there is another dinner tonight by RD also, same thing I heard.

I have a NOS BNIB explorer 2 black dial 16570 . z series , first batch of of 16570 using the 3186 movement and Rehaut ring. Full box and paper, dated warranty expired. Factory sticker still on the watch , unsized.

WTT with other modern rolex. Trade value $7500.

For me, more than any other factor, it's the perceived quality of the new 42mm explorer that really stands out against the previous model.

The bracelet is in another class. The older bracelet literally feels like it belongs on a sub $200 watch. The newer bracelet finally made up for the lack of "solid-ness".

Another interesting thing is, the black dial 42mm is the first matte dial from Rolex after many years of using gloss dials.

Handle both models side by side, and it will become very clear that the price difference (not that much really comparing preowned watches) is very much worth the quality upgrade.

yes plus the orange Explorer wordings and thicker hands... i am super tempted to lay my hand on one since brand new price is abt 7.7k... But i aiming AP first.
