What is the view of getting a Tag Heuer Carrera 1887 43mm at 7k+?

Screen_Shot_2015_03_07_at_8_58_23_am.png

As much as I should be getting a watch that I fancy, I do want it to make economical sense as well :D

I did some searching, a Tag Heuer model that costs 6k, on the second hand market it costs 4k and that is after 4 months of usage. Does Tag Heuer not hold its value well?

Personally? i feel tag watches are pretty safe bet for a purchase but it doesn't scream out "Hey IM A TAG" with its details.

Those that hold value well are those that are unique/look unique/made uniquely/loud i feel. And naturally more people will desire them and notice them.

Tag has really poor resale value. If you are like me and tend to get bored and sell, must buy used or at deep discount to minimize loss. Anyway tag makes nice watches but 7k plus for a calibre 1887? Not worth? Might as well get speed master pro and save some money or top up and get a tag with calibre 36 or a Zenith chronograph.

I think if you are looking at value retention, preowned is your best bet for Tag.

But if you can get one of those vintage heuer monacos.. :D

I woke up a bit groggy after a night out and went to flip back a few pages just to double confirm what I glanced through last night and that iceflight really posted a pam 530 and said it was a "casual watch for unsafe countries"

LOL :D

I own 2 Tags among other brands, might be a bit biased but here are my views. Tag is seldom discussed here which is surprising considering the volume of sales... so I'll chime in. What else can you do anyway right sitting in a food court with wife waiting for kids tuition to end.

For automobile inspired watches, Tag Heuer is it. Tag made a big advance with it's in-house 1887. Many jumped in to get them to silence the naysayers (yes Tag-bashing is a hobby for many) that Tag uses non in-house movements. Tag also focused on some complicated stuff the Mikrotimer and what not..in an attempt to go upstream in Manufacture status. Tag only recently has said they are changing this strategy. As many brands are increasing prices to be more atas (Veblen good concept) Tag is planning to fill the mid to low-mid luxury gap. Smart move imo.

Holding value is a tricky thing. High demand + low supply are key ingredients. Few watches hold value. Tag is just not one of the few who do. If holding value is a big concern, buy second hand.

Tag was THE watch in the 1990s (remember Boris Becker's "Don't Crack Under Pressure"....this tag line (pun not intended) was so good they brought it back recently. You'll find men in their 50s sporting older model Tags quite often.

The Carrera is a classic watch. Other than the Monaco the Carrera is world famous if not more so then the Monaco. So be happy to get it.

The watches that scream their identities (recognisable from far) in my opinion are not many.. Rolex (sub and relatives + DJ...but its the most faked and homaged watch so..), Panerai, AP ROO line.... not many. In fact the double sub dials of your Tag at 12 and 6 are pretty characteristic of the Carrera.

Sorry but the part about "not worth it" and go get the Speedy is pure personal opinion and almost hard-on-the-ear cliche. OP, get what you like.

Ok.....backside start to hurt sit too long liao....end of post.
