My explorer 2; my first luxury watch handed to me by my dad a couple of years ago, bought it in my year of birth. It's a tritium dial and the lume has died but I guess it's still not too shabby given it's age.

Nope, not shabby at all. Planning to pass my watches to my sons when they come of age also

Hi all, seeking some advice here. Recently started to experience feeling the 'vibration' of the rotor on my Rolex submariner date (16610) through the oyster casing. First time encountering in the 8 years or so since I had the watch.

Would anyone have similar experience or know what the problem could be?

I guess it might be time for a servicing, which leads to my next question of any reliable 3rd party shop (other than RSC and JW) recommendations for servicing?

This watch has been well worn for about 7 years without any service. When I checked it, I noticed a strange noise inside the watch. The winding weight (rotor) touched bridges and the case back while rotating. I hoped that perhaps the automatic winding module was not screwed in properly. But after one look at the movement it was clear that the problem is in the oscillating weight axle. The movement was full of red dust - a product of wear. I've checked the rotor axle jewel - it was dirty but not damaged. As for the axle - it was worn enough to allow the rotor to touch movement parts."

Nice condition and good provenance . I prefer the 40mm Explorer ii, more in line with the traditional and historic Rolex, during a time where they were truly the best in prestige sports watches.

Thanks. I didnt know the 3135 workhorse doesnt use ball bearings on the rotor. Can appreciate better JLC's use of ceramic ball bearings.

Hey guys

TLDR:
Does anyone know how much the IWC 5001 and 5007 go for? And for a budget of SGD 10,000 - 12,000, what watches should I get?

Details:
I'm planning on getting my first "real" watch (going to be upgrading from a Citizen watch) and thought I should get some feedback before pulling the trigger.

I've looked around for a bit and am in love with the IWC Portuguese (tried the Chronograph 3714 today) - found it just the right mix of sporty and dressy - versatile enough for my needs. Also like a few JLCs but for my budget (SGD 10,000 - 12,000), I think only the Reserve de Marche stands out.

What kept me from getting the IW 3714 was the fact the case was sealed- not a deal breaker, but at that price (was quoted slightly over SGD 10,000), I prefer to go with something with a clear caseback like the IW5007 (that I did not manage to try or get a price for).

Question:
- Any recommendations given my budget and taste?
- Any indicative price of the IW 5001 (out of curiosity) and IW 5007? Wonder if they are within my budget.

Other points of note:
- No Zeniths please, I know the movement is good and the price is great value, but they are simply not my taste.
- No Rolexes or Speedmasters too, find them too common.
- I've tried the IWC Pilot Chronograph but unfortunately it looks odd on me.
- I prefer watches with in-house movements.
- I prefer watches with steel casing with leather straps.
- Will likely be getting the watch from an AD, unless there's some compelling reason to go to the boutique.

when i was considering a week long power reserve and considering the IWC 7-day (against the Pam233 8 days) , there were some questions about how the IWC movement is regulated and calculated to be accurate over 7 days, albeit with a noticeable day to day variance...not sure if they fixed it or left it that way.

Ok so IWC-wise I guess I'll stick to the Portuguese Chrono. Regarding the Speedmaster, actually that was my first target but after seeing this thread (been lurking for a while), kind of lost the feel as it seems so common.

Can empathize with how you feel...no doubt its a great design, but it is prevalent in all watch forums, quite possibly the most common with WIS folks.

Right now more interested in the odd Patch/Jap limited issues for more exclusivity. Kept the one on the left, sold the '68 tropical dial a while ago...

definitely time for a check up but seems like an odd piece - rolexes have been known to go for 10 + as a daily beater without service and come out fine.

About 5 years ago, the MontBlanc DLC Sport Chrono caught my eye and I fell in love with it. I did not have the $$ to purchase it then. As my knowledge on watches grew, I became more hesitant to purchase it as I did not want to overpay for a watch with standard 7750 mvt. Still loved the look thou. I was disappointed to learn that the watch was discontinued last year, but I still do frequent searches online for it.

I was able to find one on eBay during August last year and I started bidding for it, I won the auction but just nice was in Korea for meeting. I tried to pay via Paypal but the bank found the transaction suspicious and reversed it. Just like that I made a loss of few hundred dollars due to currency conversion. After that I lost interest in the watch.

Last week, I was getting my moonwatch modded at LuAnn. While browsing through her shop I came across this watch and knew I had to get it. I traded a watch which I seldom wear and top up some cash for it. Apologies for babbling so much, but I'm happy that I got the first Swiss watch that caught my eye. The oem strap was too short, hence I got a Kain Heritage Croc strap for it.

No better feeling than BUY at first sight !

One final feature worthy of note: the mainspring of the cal. 50010 carries a theoretical power reserve of eight days, but the watch will run for only seven days on a full wind. At the end of the seven day period, a stop mechanism engages the balance. This is intended to ensure isochronism for the entire operating period; modern mainsprings deliver fairly consistent power over most of their power curve but the last part of the power reserve often produces a significantly lower balance amplitude, to some degree, and in giving a watch with a functional seven day reserve an actual eight day reserve, this problem is minimized. The alert owner may thus manually wind the watch to store power if he or she wishes to do so as the end of the reserve is approached, whilst at the same time resting assured that the mainspring is delivering power consistently across the entire functional operating curve.

love your directness but to balance the argument is a very pretty and versatile design, lots of brands print logos and accuracy wise its about how its designed to function - across 7 days instead from day to day....

My guess is that its designed and meant to be worn as a 2-day-a-week watch, and regulated so that its accurate by the end of the power reserve cycle.

still its been some time when this was raised in the internet forums and I won't be surprised if IWC has made changes to keep up with the "standard" way of regulating (inaccurate at either ends of the power reserve cycle; disregarded when regulating, hence pam 8 days is acutally 10-11 days reserve).
