Tag marketing should learn a thing or two from omega.
Look at how many iterations of limited Ed models they can churn out using just the moonwatch legacy. And moonwatch+snoopy==sell like hotcakes I reckon

Actually i think it cheapens the speedmaster. Akin to the AP ROO...so many plays on the same dial layout n bezel.

It's feels cheap as many ppl own it
In their view, they are selling and profits rolling in. The price of watch has not come down

this one is nice, except that they should have used the "period correct" movement - the 1861....the coaxial moon watch is stretching it bit tooooooo faaaarrrrrrrr......

but to pwillie's point, if tag launched just a pure "heuer" historic series they could actually strengthen the brand positioning and possibly even make a credible link to modern motorsports. just look at the difference in prices between vintage Heuers and used tag heuer monacos ... Tag missing a trick there it seems.

on the omega speedmaster itself i think they risk overselling their watch while trying desperately to raise prices with the new packaging - might just end up like tag heuer monaco's where the older original 321/861 will just command higher pricing as they flood the market with 50 shades of speedmasters, and each one further away from the original/

tldr: looks like both headed down the same path.

Just kiddin'. I know you meant 321.

no i've given up on omega ever bringing back the 321... at least the 1861 would have been plausible and realistic.

like tag heuer, omega are missing something by not bringing back the 321 for their 50 shades of the moon line. they could charge a fortune and get away with it!

This is a modern take on the old 7077/1039 bracelet style - so it's essentially "period correct". I doubt rolex will ever remake their old rivet bracelets, and some micro brands (e.g. MKII) have already capitalized on that demand...

True that. Hard to justify to the uneducated consumer why a nicer-looking but less accurate movement is being used though - the 321 only has value to the vintage audience.

On the bright side, omega i think fared alot better at this baselworld than tag... that new carrera is a nightmare!

I beg to differ, 2 points that made it different from the ROO:
1.the limited ed usually is focused on commemorating a space event, thus it is more meaningful than for something that is hardly associated with (ROO orchard rd/lebron, speedy schumacher:s22:)
2.price range of the Speedy much lesser than a AP ROO when Omega is marketed for the masses, though i would agree with you when the speedy price goes to a ROO level (god forbid), where a certain exclusivity is expected

but as aXXXXXX points out, it runs the risk of having too many editions, esp with a single edt running in thousands.
but then without limited editions, what can the fanboys spend on? :o

some things are not meant to be.... it will probably be a nightmare supporting an EOL movement... but i guess profits over historical integrity

can someone shed some light about swatch's group to limit the supply of ETA watches? does that mean that next time we will not be able to service watches by other brands that use ETA movement like tudors and pams?

While each ed is linked to a space event, it has gotten to a point of an obvious commercial milking. Every 5-10 years u have yet another anniversary edition of the same event while some other events are fairly obscure unless u r a big nasa/space fan

i believe the precise move by swatch is to restrict sale of complete movements to competitors, especially the smaller brands that use it claim "swiss movement.

Its unclear how they will continue to supply spare parts: notices have been given out to independent watch makers warning them that they will not be accepting further orders of movements and components.

however brands like tudor iwc are likely to be able to get parts to honour their obligations to their customers.

in any case, chinese companies have been producing whole ETA movements for years now, have no fear that there won't be parts easily accessible.
