there was another lady vanilla way asking for advice on watch for her bf/fiancée/husband/etc couple of years ago - old timers here will certainly recall. you asking for advice has a sense of deja vu for us.

what is a legit watch means diff things to diff people. some value practicality, toughness, water resistance and accuracy. a G-shock is perfect for them. some are into gadgetry. a smart watch is great for them. some can't tell the difference, not into watches or don't even bother. some, like us who are passionate about watches obsessed over details others don't care about. even then, not all of us have the cash to splash like dai dai kor iceflight. so for me, i need to be prudent and knowledgeable - in knowing watches, and more importantly, myself, my taste, my needs and my financial situation so that i maximize my enjoyment. (apologies for using "i" cos i can't speak for everyone).

for eg. watch nerds like us can appreciate grand seikos for the reasons that non-watch people don't care about. for them a grand Seiko is "only a Seiko". watch nuts love watches for being the tight tolerance mechanical marvel that has a heartbeat that marks the passage of time packaged in a case & dial that appeals to different sensitivities - similar to how shoes and bags turn some ladies on. it's generally a guy thing. so what may impress a person who's into watches may not interest the general public.

well, if you're absolutely sure that both your jobs are secure (not a given in this day and age of hire & fire plus retrenchments looming uncomfortably over the current economic landscape), than perhaps you can consider a rolex submariner date brand spanking new from an AD as a once-and-for-all wedding+birthday+anniversary+V-day present and be done with it. even at $11,000, a 36 month interest free repayment works out to be $306/mth - just $10+ a day for 1,095 days. if you're not averse to pre-owned but with guarantee card, papers & box, you can save a bit by having the owner take the first hit on depreciation.

problem is: does your hub has the standing in his job to wear it? would it bring more trouble than it's worth if his supervisor/bosses think it too showy if he wears one? also, what if it got lost, stolen, etc?

you can consider homages (they're NOT REPLICAS, ok!) like steinhart, squale, tisell, davosa ternos as affordable alternatives for the quintessential sports watch, the rolex sub, until such time that the rolex sub makes more sense, if you get my drift.

if they seem too hard up/wanna-be rolex, then i heartily recommend the tudor black bay noir in steel bracelet. you can get one bnib with valid warranty for $3.6k easy on the secondary market.

this is the watch that most agree nailed the 50s rolex submariner vibe with its black gilt dial and red triangle bezel. its gilt-accented black/stainless steel look means it goes well from a business suit to a birthday suit. it's tough, it's water resistant and has a proven classic vintage design that will keep looking this good for years to come.

Great long advise. Watch has always been a personal want rather than a need. It will depends on the individual, his like and dislike. TT01 has listed the evergreens of watches. A good list to consider!

Me not vintage watch expert. Can't really comment on those models.

My take is that the 114060 could be a good buy for you Long term. Newer movement and workhorse. Great daily beater. Timeless design. Better bezel and bracelet.

Pre-own may be cheaper but if you could save up and get a new one, I think you will have no regrets

need some advice...im a 26 y/o guy bringing home 2.3K/month...currently have a seiko sarw015 & orient mako liao

was targeting a swiss watch, and has casted eyes to Rolex for my end-of-year bonus purchase...between GMTs and Submariners, i prefer the submariner (sorry GMT owners, no offence hor, its strictly a personal taste thing!)

my preliminary check shows that submarines are in the 7-8K range, whereas GMTs is 8-10k range...just this morning i went carousell and checked for fun, wa submariner got many variants & price range!

Bro, your budget of $7K would best suit a 16610 with box and papers. A smart, handsome watch for almost any occasion. But, its just so very common IMO..

The 1680 and 5513 you showed are considered vintage... and are my favourite time pieces due to their rarity and value. But, you will have to do sufficient homework on these! (These 2 you showed have been long sold)

really depends on you.

14060/16610 are 1 generation older than current offerings.

they lack ceramic bezel and have stamped bracelet which feels more dinky but has smaller lugs and crown guard which is more elegant to most people. movement wise theres small variations depending on year too. other than that theres also minute difference such as rehaut on later years. for 14060 the older models have 2 lines instead of 4 at the bottom which tend to make for a even cleaner look.

114060/116610 are current generation steel subs

they are more brash models with thicker lugs and thicker crown guards. they also have maxi dial(bigger indices). bracelets are also upgraded with solid links.

16610 prices are quite close to 114060 prices. personally i chose the 114060 for a cleaner look and the cheaper price as compared to 116610.

Got budget and need date. Can buy the 16610. It's lighter and more elegant compare to the 116610.
16610 is pretty cheap for the older models. Going as low as 5k.
A bro here got the 114060 with warranty for 7k only. Frigging good deal. Full box and all

Ceramic more scratch resistant but prone to cracking. More bling and etched markers
Stainless steel won't crack but prone to scratching and printed markers.
