Hi all, just want to check if it's normal for thinkpad's value to depreciate alot in 2 years? I bought a X1 carbon 7th gen in nov 2019 for 2.2k, planning to sell it now but carousell buyers/ laptop trade in companies quoted me $250-$500 for it. I was expecting 1.5-1.7k for it, am I overvaluing it? It still works fine, no lag or anything

i7 8th gen
512gb ssd
16gb ram
Warranty until Nov 2022

normally all these company look to resell it to other user, so in order to have good profit, they will always take in very cheap and resell it higher, unless you sell it to another user, then that will be different.

Another example, i experience similar thing when i sell my brand new iphone to those iphone shop/company, they take in around 500-600 lower, some even lower, than when i sold it directly to another user.

The unfortunate fact is this, hardware depreciates really quickly. The moment you buy say a laptop, whether you use it or not, the steep depreciation will start. Especially when we have seen significant improvement in hardware performance over the last couple of years. Consider the fact that your laptop processor is an 8th Gen Core I processor, and currently its on the 11th Gen, I am pretty sure people may not offer a lot for it now. By my estimation, it would be worth around 1K in the resale market. Having said that, you are free to price whatever you want and depending on people's reception to it, adjust prices accordingly.

Anyway those trade in shops will always undercut you so that they can earn more when reselling locally or most likely overseas. If you think that the prices they offer is unreasonable, then just ignore and try to sell it to someone that appreciates the laptop and offers more.

1k?? U might be joking when I can get 700 dollars for a Ryzen 4500u laptop second hand. There was a posting at at 650 dollars for 4500u. Nobody with the right knowledge would buy 8265u at 1k or 1.1k, topup little more u can get 4800h lenovo legion.

The only products that hold value will be macbook, that's before m1 chip coming out. Nobody with right mind will go for old macbooks unless suitably priced because of the m1.

U can sell it 1.5 or 1.7k within the 6 months or one year u purchased it, with Ryzen and m1 and new Intel CPU, u can sell to enthusiast who willing to pay it. Personally, I bought Asus budget series 8265u for 550 like one year ago. I needed to get a more powerful laptop after, but unable to find decent price from carousel as the prices are not worth it. End up i ask wife to buy 4800H 32gb ram 1650ti lenovo legion from China, only 1.3k SGD brand new. 2 years warranty, thought to upgrade my 8265u from carousel but nobody selling 4500u or 4800u cheaply in carousel, guess I will stick to it since it's work laptop.

If you are looking at specs, the 4500U is obviously faster. But if you are looking at the Thinkpad series, the Carbon series is pretty much one of the higher end models. And not everyone is savvy to know that AMD is actually faster than an Intel and thus, want to buy an AMD based system. There are other considers at play here, for instance, people want slim and light laptops, which the Lenovo Legion may not really fit in that category.

Whether you can sell a laptop for 75% or 80% of your purchase value really depends on when you get it. If you are buying it at the tail end before a new generation of hardware is coming up, then you need to be prepared for a steep depreciation. I ever purchased a laptop in the past just before the release of a new generation of Intel processor, and when that came to past, the value of my laptop plunged at least 50%.

As for your case, I am not sure how much you are expecting to sell a laptop that you purchase at 550. But if you are considering to upgrade to something better, then might as well sell for whatever best offer you get. The longer you hold, the less value you are going to get for it.

Agreed, I got the 8265u at low price , I came to realize some cosmetic minor issue like seller use wrong screws so near trackpad has small indentation. Another small indentation came after I went to service it at Asus official shop at Bugis junction. I did not noticed it when they return. So now 2 pops. However probably will continue to use it as it's work laptop. Even if to sell it I think won't lose much money. Losing 100 or 200 not an issue, the beauty of buying cheap price is lower depreciation.

Thanks for all the insight. At this rate I would just keep using it until I find a proper buyer. I did get my brother to list it on carousell for me as well; was planning to change to an ipad pro when I sell this off.

The depreciation by dollar value is low, but if you look at %, then its gonna take a big hit. :p

Anyway, work laptop don't need to be too fanciful. I was planning to get one cheap Atom based system in the past for work since the power consumption is very low, and system is fairly cheap. Its not powerful, but enough to run Citrix for work.

If you really want to sell it off for something else, you need to be prepared to give an attractive discount. Otherwise, you will be stuck with it. Alternatively, you can repurpose it. Anyway, I feel it is not a good time to consider an iPad Pro now since the current models are using an outgoing A12Z. Better to wait for the upcoming refresh. So you still have time.

I think you can try, but considering the prices of Apple iPad Pro is usually very high, its very likely that you will need to top up.

Keeping as spare if you are willing to let is depreciates further.
