So what does saw palmetto do? Slows down hair loss? Does it help in hair growth? i have fine hair, does it help to thicken them? Any side effect?

Unfortunately, there is no one product that can solve everyone's problem, period.
The norm products for most people who just started treatment are fin(proscar, propecia), minoxidil and nizoral. From there then u deicde whether they are suitable or whether u should add in more product.

U might want to read more from previous posts or elsewhere online before u decide what treatment to go for based on your hair condition. Know the side-effects especially.

Q. What can you tell me about saw palmetto? I read that it's a good herbal remedy for hair loss and baldness.

Answer: Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens or Sabal serrulata) is a dwarf palm plant native to North America. It primarily grows along the Atlantic coast in Georgia and Florida. The active ingredients are believed to be found in the plant's brown-black berries.

Saw palmetto was a popular folk remedy used by Native Americans to treat urinary conditions in men and breast disorders in women.

It has become an accepted treatment for symptoms associated with benign prostate gland enlargement (called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) in many parts of Europe and in New Zealand. In North America, saw palmetto is considered an alternative herbal remedy for BPH.

Saw palmetto is also popular as an herbal remedy for a type of hair loss and baldness called androgenic alopecia, or male- and female-pattern baldness. This type of hair loss is typically the greatest at the top of the head or around the temples.

Although we still don't know exactly how it works, it's believed that it may block an enzyme (5-alpha-reductase) from allowing the hormone testosterone from being converted to another hormone, dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is considered a key contributing factor to the onset and progression of androgenic alopecia and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Saw palmetto has also been found to affect the levels of sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen in other ways.

Much of saw palmetto's popularity as a remedy for hair loss and baldness, however, is based on how it's believed to work rather than on evidence that it actually does. Although there have been some lab studies showing that saw palmetto can inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, there are no well-designed clinical studies showing that saw palmetto can cause hair growth, or stop hair loss or baldness from progressing. One of the only published trials on saw palmetto for baldness is a small study involving 10 men with mild to moderate male pattern baldness. Although promising, the study was too small to provide meaningful evidence.

Like most other herbal supplements, saw palmetto has potential side effects. The most common side effects associated with saw palmetto use are mild stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and bad breath. Some men taking saw palmetto have reported erectile dysfunction, breast tenderness or enlargement, and changes in sexual desire.

There have been rare case reports describing liver inflammation, pancreatitis, jaundice, headache, dizziness, insomnia, depression, breathing difficulties, muscle pain, high blood pressure, chest pain, abnormal heart rhythm, blood clots, and heart disease, but it's not clear that these side effects were directly caused by saw palmetto.

Although it hasn't been well-demonstrated in humans, saw palmetto may influence levels of sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Until we know more, people with hormone-sensitive conditions, such as breast cancer, should use caution. Also, saw palmetto could theoretically interfere with oral contraceptives and hormone therapy.

At least two case reports have linked saw palmetto with severe bleeding. People with bleeding disorders or who are taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications ("blood-thinners")--such as warfarin (Coumadin), aspirin, or clopidogrel (Plavix)--should avoid taking saw palmetto unless under medical supervision. It should also be avoided at least two weeks before and after surgery.

The safety of saw palmetto for pregnant or nursing women, children, or people with kidney or liver disease hasn't been established.

Last time went to my mum friend hse to do herbal treatment, but don't really help as i still see my hair thinning, maybe will try Bee Choo ba since my friend recommend it that it really help

I'm with YN for 9mths but there is no improvement if not worsen. Kind of piss off with their hardsell approach. Always ask me to continuse with their package. Have spend close to 10k on 2time renewer of their treatment package and medication. I'm abt to give up on YN. Spend so much yet no improvement..always tell me there is baby hair but they keep falling. When i first started on their treatment after the 3wk i experience hairfall(initally non that i took notice of) until now(9mths) i'm still having it. I can see hair on the floor and my desk so demoralizing.

Initially, both of my sides were thin, now i'm experiencing hair thining in the middle and clown.

I think i will try some methods posted in the forums or svenson if i got some spare cash..(regret spending SO MUCH on YN without doing research in the first place)

it was really a wrong move, but never too late to realise.. but that amount of money can already go for hair transplantation...

Men from $25 and Ladies from $28(above shoulder) to $50 (waist and below)
At least they won't hard sell for package.

Pretty wise choice of words for treating hairloss like to "delay" and "control" instead of "stop" or "prevent".

But it seems like assessing the scalp and hair of customer is not part of the treatment process(which i think is pretty important). Maybe they will, but it is not stated in the webby.

In all, i feel this is worth a try. For my case, i have oily scalp. So this would probably help in controlling the oil that clogs my follicles, and perhaps to treat my premature white hair. Meantime i'm also taking fin to inhibit my DHT, so it's always good to have the scalp in good condition to combat hairloss. If just a treatment per month($25), i think it's pretty affordable, just like doing monthly facials haha.

I tried for about 3 sessions twice monthly.. Well, i can say if u going to treat white hairs they are good.. As for MPB, i din continue coz of the herbal smell.. it is not that bad but distinct herb smell.. I was so uneasy when i have to take bus home from the saloon..
The smell will stay for about 2-3days.. there after when u perspire, u still can smell the herbal smell on ur hair.. The herb really stay!!

Cos he is inherit from his father, so the last time i chatted with him he recommended bee choo to me, he had been receiving treatment for 4 mths, n he say got great improve on the clown of his hair, he can c hair growing back and it cheap, so might consider there at least there is a chance. But if you went through bee choo website their gallery also show some picture of their previous customer who experiencing hair drop n later having hair back.

Hey thanks for the feedback. Are u still going back there for treatment? I do agree the strong smell can be awkward and embarrassing esp meeting friends haha.

Nope, he is nt receiving other treatments except for going the bee choo place for the herbal treatment, anyway heard from him that you have to purchase some shampoo from them during your first visit.

Nope, i din buy any of their products coz i just want to test out herbal treatment. Lucky they are not hard-selling..phew..

I have not go for abt 2mth due to finding a suitable time for the treatment so that i can avoid friends' meeting n work.. The smell of herb will raise friends' curiousity..
Planning for leaves these coming months, maybe i will revisit during weekday..

My hair loss start to get worse 2 years ago ..Within 7 months, i can see the crown and lok like a uncle...I started proscar 6 months ago ,although the severe hair loss was controlled ,there is not much improvement in the thickness of my hair..I tried using minoxidil for 3 years and combinaion with proscar for 6 months but seems that i can only hope my hair remains and not get worse...Sad that there is no chance to get even half the hair i had last time.

I just bought a brand name 爽快柑 (Shokaigan) imported from japan, selling in all NTUC Unity outlets.Consist of a prevent hair loss shampoo and a intensive hair growth tonic which cost roughly $158. Personally been using it for a few days le, the shampoo supposed to be able to give volume to your hair, thus really help me alot since i having thinning hair, as for the hair growth tonic wise, i will continue to update more info whether it will help in hair growth.
