Is there any difference between propecia and finasteride ?

I just bought 2 boxes of finasteride tablets USP 1 mg recently.

Manufactured in india by Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd - Finax.

Anyone taking the same brand as me?

Just to assure myself,
Take 1 tablets per day right?

Hi xpiggyx, dr reddy's lab is licensed by merck & co, who holds the patent for finasteride for hair loss. Hence, your drug should be legitimate. And 1mg of finasteride per day is the prescription for hair loss.

Just to share, i just stopped my intake of finasteride after just 1 month on it cos i've noticed that i developed a worrying symptom - my ejaculate has become very watery (i.e. not thick) and this is a cause for concern that other sides, such as ED, decreased libido, etc. could follow in.

I hope you do your homework as to what this drug can cause you. Even though it is stated that the effects are reversible by merck, there are significant number of cases out there where men are suffering from permanent side effects.

Not trying to scare you, but the dangers are there and very real. Do assess the risks carefully. But if it works for you without side effects, it will be a wonder hit. There are also people who have taken finasteride for over 10 years with only better-looking and healthier hair and not a bit of problem.

My point is that the effects will vary for every individual. And my advice for you, if you were to decide to start taking the drug, pay close attention to any development for any side effects.

All the best! :)

p.s. Can somebody share with me where do they get their supply of Nizoral from? Thanks.

hey, thks for the advice.

I'm aware of the side effects of finasteride and willing to risk it and face the consequences.

So there are symptoms leading to ED ? What should i look out for ?
Or you just get it one day, suddenly ?

Other than ED, are there any possible side effects ?

I have abandoned my common sense out of desperation.

No problem at all. :) I just thought that i should share my little experience since there seems to be many people on finasteride here, yet so little raised on side effects.

If you're sexually active, that might be a good way to keep track. I cannot confirm how ED will hit out at victims, but i suppose the symptoms can hit you suddenly, or you may gradually 'lose' it. It really depends on how the drug works, and again, this vary from person to person. This is just my personal take, you may want to do more research on it.

There is a whole list of side effects experienced; mainly sexually-linked, but depression, brain fog and memory loss are also possible. It is quite comprehensively compiled in this link: http://www.propeciahelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7

Hope the information is useful to you.

Cheers!

Oh, just to answer to your question regarding propecia and finasteride - Propecia is the brand name for 1mg finasteride. There are other brand names with the exact same content such as Finax, Finpecia, Proscar (5mg), etc. Wikipedia will give you the answer already.

Finasteride is the active androgen that exists in all these pills that inhibits the 5AR enzyme which in turn reduces the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the hormone responsible for MPB.

Important thing to note is that: DHT is the crucial hormone that distinguishes gender! :s31:

But I still tried finasteride out of desperation. :s13:

Yup, but i believe the people on that forum are only a minority of all who has taken finasteride. I have a friend who has been on propecia for over a year now, he has no issue at all. :) Whatever it is, just be alert to any body changes while you are on it.

As for now, i will continue with minoxidil without finasteride and pray that it will work for me.

I am using minoxidil too..

However I only use it at night.
Cause there isn't time to allow my hair to dry in the morning b4 i go to work.
I dun like it to be wet, cox the scalp will be visible.

I doubt it will have any effect, but still i use it as a placebo.

I heard got the foam one.. duno whether is good not..
You using the liquid one or the foam ?

I see. You might want to consider adding 0.01% retin-A/retinoic acid/tretinoin into your night minoxidil application. There has been a clinical trial done by some korean university with regards to this. And if i remember correctly, the study showed that by applying the combination of minoxidil and retin-A once a day, you will be able to achieve similar results as to those who apply minoxidil twice a day.

I'm using liquid minoxidil at the moment. Agree with you on the visible scalp part. I have to force myself to wake up earlier just to make sure that my scalp is dry before i leave my house. It's a real hassle but i will keep my faith on it for at least a year (11 more months to go :s13:). Will drop the idea if there's no results by then.

But i don't have experience on the foam minoxidil. Perhaps someone with experience is kind enough to share?

Retin-A exists in liquid form, which i reckon can be mixed and stirred together with minoxidil. The part where it is not clear is the volume ratio to mix. There's no clear direction i can find off the internet as well. :s7:

Chill man. Take it easy.

Hmm, how do u know if u have the male pattern hair loss or other hair loss problems?? Im still wondering what cause my hairloss. I used to wash my hair 3 times daily with warm or near hot water. My parents and bros have thick hair. So Im wondering if its becoz of me washing with warm water and 2 to 3 times daily instead of male pattern hair loss? In this case propecia will not be useful for me??

How do I know wat kinda hair loss Im suffering for?

Is your hair thinning consistent or is it localized in specific areas? Is there a particular shape for your hair loss, i.e. O-shaped, M-shaped? Are you losing hair suddenly in patches or gradually over a region?

If you are losing hair uniformly on your crown or from the apex, or have receding hairline (M-shaped), then it is likely MPB. Also, the loss should be gradual (eg. over months/years) rather than sudden.

Best way to find out is to see a doctor, preferably a dermatologist. Only when you've identified the root to your hair loss problem, then you will know whether propecia will curb the problem or not. But even if it is MPB, propecia may or may not work for you.

As for the genetics concerned, you can ask for your mum's father's (your maternal grand-dad's) condition. If he has had balding conditions, then it will explain it all. And it's well-documented that MPH can strike any time from as early as 18 even if your grand-dad only start balding at 60.

I've heard of lesser hair loss from more shampoo-ing so i'm not certain. But even if there is a study on it, it would likely to be dismissed as pure correlation and difficult to justify.

I believe the hairloss is gradual as I've been noticing hair built up at the drainage area whenever I shower for many months. Mayb 1 yr or even more. I had never really took notice of my hair but I have receeding hairline, just that 1 side might be higher than the other side. And now it looks pretty bad when my hair is wet. Its going to be dessert soon with sparsly few trees when wet. My scalp can clearly be seen on front and top. I just took a few photos from helicopter view and its frightening. Side and back are still rather thick. I think that the balding process is actually worst than being bald itself.

I seem to be losing more hair than norm when using propecia and upon reading on the net, its normal. Hope the doc at NSC can tell my balding type. If its lifestyle then there's no point wasting money in propecia.

From what you've described, it seems likely that it is MPB. Would recommend you to visit NSC for confirmation asap since you've already started taking propecia.

Are you also using minoxidil? And how long have you been on propecia? Usually users of propecia/minoxidil will undergo 'shedding', a stage whereby your hair goes into the rest state, most commonly 3-6 weeks into the treatment. It is a sign that the treatment is working and hair growth merely re-started its cycle.

I'm suffering from the same thinning crown except that my hairline hasn't retreated significantly yet. It is indeed very depressing to see my hair in this state especially when i look back at photos where i was able to style my hair fashionably. Now my hair is flat and barely able to fully cover my scalp at best. :(

Yo, I've booked an appt with NSC and will go in 2 weeks time. Is it better to get a Snr consultant? I went to the polyclinic to get a referral so Im not sure if the doc will do a thorough examination. Im not using minoxidil but I heard its proven to work too. Might ask the doc for it. As for Propecia, Ive been using for like 1.5 mths and somehow I think the hairdrop rate has increased. So Im pass the 3-6 weeks shedding period. My frd who's been using it said he shedded like 3 mths and started to see hair growth from 6 mths onward.

Now, Im not sure if i still wanna continue with the other treatment that Im having. Its just apply amplue, massage, using special shampoo. Applying amplue doesnt seem to work at all.

Im like you, the hair stylist used to say my hair grows too fast and was thick but now.....

I just hope the doc at NSC can tell me what is causing my balding.
