That applies to all kinds of luggage,be it bag or pulley type. But bag companies got come up with bags that fit most of the airline requirements to the max..

As a general rule, 46L is the max cabin size. This is for most of the international airline, but best is to check before you bring it up. I never had problem with my 55L though, just transform it.

when u get your bag the salesperson should say or it has tags on it saying the specs. if not just google for your bag and find out? sometimes its easy to recognise the volume when shopping, e.g. they put like deuter 30 on the bag which more or less indicates it should be a 30L bag..

I think it depends on whether they want to be picky about it. Having said that I have ever brought up a Deuter 50+10 on SQ but there wasn much load within and so it looked smallish.

If those ang moh use 65L or even 85L plus their shoes hanging out and sleeping bag on top ect... They check it in. Just check with your airline on the rules for the bag size.

Maybe you can take a picture of your backpack for us to see or search online your model?

I always manage to get my Osprey Atmos 50 on as cabin luggage when I want to. Choosing a dark colour bag helps, I think. The problem is usually about its weight.

If carry-on, 1 big bag and 1 laptop bag. If no laptop bag, substitute it with a tote bag.

I encourage all to bring backpack bags for carry-on rather than those trolley bags. Hallelujah to those who carry backpack bags on board. Trolley bags are really very irritating.

Just measure the length, size and height of your bag, and compare it against what the airlines allow (the limit of L+B+H, called the linear size, is usually 114cm). But backpacks have more leeway because they are soft, and as long as you don't stuff it full, you can squash the bag to a smaller size when stowing it.

If I want the volume of a backpack without specs, I measure the size, and then take 75% of it. Eg, if LxBxH = 40L, I just take 0.75*40L= 30L.

Those people with big bags are trying their luck. Sometimes, the staff will allow, sometimes they won't. If you try your luck and it's not your lucky day, you'll be forced to check it in, and if you are on a budget airline, you have to pay $20-30 to check in your luggage.

Also, just because the counter staff allow you to bring in your bag doesn't mean the gate staff will allow it. So better to be safe and ensure your bag is not too big.

I'm quite confused. Let's say scoot's cabin baggage allowance

Please note that cabin baggage, regardless of class, cannot exceed dimensions of 54cm x 38cm x 23cm (total linear dimensions cannot exceed 115cm)

Do I have to strictly follow each dimension's length stated above (54cm x 38cm x 23cm)?
Or I just need to ensure that the total linear dimensions is less than 115cm?

Technically, it should be the first one, because they are not going to measure your bag and add up the sides. They'll just eye it visually to see if it's too long, too wide or too fat.

They may ask you to put your into those hand-carry luggage frames used to check luggage size. If it cannot fit, then it's too big.

If you luggage is hard-case luggage, then you have to be quite strict since even 1 cm too big will mean it cannot fit into the luggage frame. But you have more leeway with soft-luggage (like backpacks) since you can squash it down by several cm easily if it's not too full.

They may also weigh your bag. Hard-luggage is usually heavy, so you are wasting your weight allowance on the luggage itself. Better to get a lightweight backpack (600g-1.5kg).

Thanks for the clarification! It is really clear and helpful :)

check out the tatonka flightcase. dilphinus swears by it. it measures 55cm x 37cm x 20cm.

i use either the osprey atmos 35 or 65 depending on what i need to bring. the frame distributes the load really well and i'm really thankful for the straps and compartments when i'm out on multi-day hikes and re-pack for quick access to essential items. the 35 already exceeds measurements at 60cm x 33cm x 30cm but i haven't had problems using it as a carry on so far.

so far the discussion is focusing mainly on the size of the bag which can be easily solved because any reputable stores (eg robinsons, mustafa) would advised you if the intended bag is cabin size.

the problem that many backpackers faced are on the weight of their hand luggage. most (most likely all) econ passengers have a carry-on weight limit of 7kg. and non-frills airlines are known to apply the rules strictly. usually the rest of the airlines are more liberal if your carry-on does not weighed "excessive". my recent trip to NRT had a carry-on of around 10kg (inclusive of a laptop, tablet and power bank).

also the dimensions given, usually just a guide, are really meant for those standard luggage (eg samsonite). hence, you will find it ridiculously impossible to find a backpack that fits the measurement exactly. standard luggage typically comes in 3 sizes - small (21"), medium (25") and large (29"). the numbers are measured diagonally across standard baggage and give/take 3". only 21" or smaller can be carry-on.
