My iMac is on sleep mode all the time. I only power it off if I am going for an overseas trip.

in singapore, its technically safe to just off the iMac without turning the power plug off... anyway all plugs that gone thru the official channel, have the safety sticker. so its safe

Hi, I did encountered the same problem like u do. However, I noticed that this happen only when you completely switch off the power plug. Once u switch on the power plug u gotta wait for a few seconds to power it on, otherwise u gotta press the power button for several times in order to power on.
