Thoughts of upgrading my system.

Was just thinking if is I should upgrade my system which is 6 years old which is still working quite well and the following

Intel C2D 6750
Asus P5KSE
3072 MB Kingston PC5300 667
Sapphire Radeon HD6670 1GB
320 GB seagate
1TB seagate
LG 20 GSA H55N dvdrw
Acbel 490 W true power
Centurion Master Elite 332
Win 7 OEM home premium edition
Have my own keyboard, monitor, mouse which can be reused.

Points to note:

1.) not much into shooting games so can retain my graphics card.Which components could I retain in my upgraded system ? Can I reuses my casing, psu for a new i5 and motherboard ? Can the new motherboard fit into my CM332 casing?

2.) not sure if my old LG 20 GSA H55N dvdrw which I think has the old IDE connection fit into the current motherboards. Do current motherboards have IDE ports? Sorry if I use wrong terms here.

3.)Would like to add a new SSD onto my system to speed things. Pls recommend.

4.) Does any shop build for you if say I were to buy the CPU +motherboard, RAM, SSD and I pass them my old casing, psu, hard disk to install in? Recommendations please.

5.) pls recommend a suitable CPU +motherboard. Thinking of getting a i5 and a ASuS motherboard since my impression of ASuS is quite good. So many motherboards and even i5 CPUs out there don't know which is of good value. I will not be over clocking but just would like my whole system to work, multitask faster.

6.) ) appreciate all suggestions, prices, where to get items from and any other tips. Of course would like to keep the budget down.

Can presume your PSU is 6 yrs old... Not recommended to keep. Can 'die' any moment. And its only 490w, not enough. Throughout the years, it may have degraded.

Only thing i see which you may be able to keep would be your HDD, if they are using SATA. Otherwise, you have to overhaul everything. Try to reactivate your wins7, call up microsoft, tell them your mobo uplorry and send for RMA, can reactivate the codes.

And, lastly, what is your budget?

If you are still using an ATX board. No problem at all

can is can.. but u need buy adapter. SATA is better. my advice is change it.

for SSD reliability is very important. i would look for the model with the highest endurance. cause it degrade over time. personally i would use a MLC NAND SSD.
good example is Samsung 840 pro (MLC) and samsung 840 (TLC)
TLC is the cheapest and lower endurance where as MLC is faster and more durable. over time the TLC will die alot faster compared to MLC..

Can is can but depends on the stall owner itself. it's like u bring ur egg to char kuey teow stall and ask them fry for you. some owner is okay but some owner will refuse. Depends on which stall. Most will kao peh but should be okay.

personally i dun quite like ASUS motherboard.. ASUS are generally more expensive..
usually when i choose motherboard i depends on RMA location.. if you stay at east ASUS is better cause RMA is at kaki bukit.. if you live at commonwealth gigabyte is better cause easier RMA location. obviously design and build is very important. but most of them some what the same.

as for you since you don't overclock i recommend you do not buy K series processor and Z series motherboard. ie 4670k need to overclock with a z87 mb. since you dun need. you can buy a cheaper H87 motherboard.

agar agar can tell how much the market price are. Fuwell are generally slightly more expensive. but i find their service better. i rather pay that slight difference and save myself trouble. they have very helpful staff there.

Thanks for all the responses. Learnt quite a lot.

1.) how does samsung pro compare with plextor pro. I notice plextor is cheaper.

2.) I will probably go with MsI motherboard or ASuS motherboard.. mSI service centre is nearer my house so probably do a MSi. How do I know if the MSI motherboard is ATX compatible ?

3.) I actually change my original psu. Th old one knocked out and I had it changed under warrany about 3 years ago I think. Not sure how long more it can last ! But generally is a 490 W supply sufficient for an i5 system with SSD, hard disk etc?

I am trying to reuse most of old components to try to keep costs down. Hence I hope in reusing my old components, I can keep the budget down to about $700 or so.

I might even try to build it myself ....

From looking at previous threads, I have come up with a possible system.

MSI B85M-E33 with i5 4570 = $341 (tradepac, I don’t need to overclock)
Adata 8gb ddr3 = $85 (tradepac)
Corsair force LS 120gb ssd = $141 (tradepac)
Reuse the following items from my old system:

1TB SATA seagate

Points to consider:
1.) what about the MSI H87M-E33 with i5 4570 which is $360 or do I consider the cheaper i5-3350p CPU which is cheaper?

2.) Is all my old and new components compatible? Yes I know taking a bit of risk with my PSU which is about 3 or 4 years old so maybe I will get a Superflower HX500 which is $89?

You confirm your HDD and ODD are all using SATA connections instead of IDE? It would be good to get a new case. With just a single input at the front and exhaust at the rear, not enough airflow. Can consider NZXT h230.

And your wins7 is tied to your mobo, so if u r changing it, you either get a new 1 or try call up microsoft and ask if can reset it as ur mobo uplorry.

hmm, i suggest overhaul.

if the condition of your case not very good i reco u get a new one.

think u can reuse ur gpu n hdds if they r in good condition.

ur psu also not very good, maybe can get a more reliable one from superflower or fsp.

ram(dun think ur ram is compatible with new boards)
case(if needed)
psu (better change)

See quite a number of recommendations for Asrock B75M dgs + i5-3350p ~ $271. How does this compare with MSI B85M-E33 with i5 4570 = $341 in terms of performance. I guess the 3350p is older but is it better in value for money over performance?

I came back and took out my whole system and put everything back with the new parts. First time I have done this by myself. All went quite smoothly but reinstallation of the windows 7 took extremely long and I was not sure whether it was actualy working. After that many hours to install again various programmes.

I been through the same kind of system updated as u just had done.
Experience that i would like to share.

Acbel is quite good actually, mine is around 6 years and still going fine. Probably i am powering a system would require > 300w on average using a 750w Psu.

But i like that adding a SSD would really make the whole system very different.

About Casing, if can re-use just do it. But, if you can manage your system internal cabling effectively it's more than enough le. I always use cable tie.

I have re-install my windows 8 like 3 times and it's still alright. Just call in and reactive the windows. It's fine.

Btw, i always built a new computer with my outdated hardware (if repairable).
Throw in a brand new MSI G41-Combo motherboard with my Q6600 CPU added an SSD. It is as good as an I Core CPU when come to daily usage and light gaming. Heck with an reasonable Gfx can even handle BF4. Haha.

Yes I know.having a SSD will do an incredible speed boost. That would be my next upgrade for next year. Don't think I will change the gfx card as I don't game that much and I will try to user the psu as long as possible. I rma my psu supply on e so this current one is 3 years old.

Just did the online activation of my win7 and it was successful. That was great! Thought having changed the motherboard I would need to call or get a new OEM win 7.
