time for an upgrade

Good morning bro and sis,

I am looking to upgrade my current rig to deal with games with 4K and as well a little dabbling into VR. I do video editing heavily so the extra cores will help

I would appreciate your help greatly with recommendations and below are some of my considerations

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5, 7 or Intel i5, i7, not looking into overclocking, so should I aim for Ryzen 7 1700?

GPU: Only looking to run a single card with no plans for SLI or Crossfire

MOBO: is there a difference between mobo for intel and ryzen, read that ryzen needs a AM4 socket but intel will require LG1151?

SSD: Looking to recycle old 120GB SSD but willing to buy a new one (has the price point for SSD come down close to 1GB per dollar?)

RAM: 16GB, is it overkill?

Peripherals: All settled except for a new computer screen, confused to go for ultra-wide or 4k

Casing: able to accomodate ATX mobo, i prefer spacey casings, something like Fractal Design Define R5

If you're into heavy video editing then Ryzen is a better bet.

The MBs for Intel and AMD are different. You would want a AM4 MB for Ryzen.

The prices for SSDs have gone way below $1 per GB for quite some time now. A 480GB SSD will cost around $300. Suggest you go for the Samsung Evo.

16GB is pretty much the norm nowadays for a decent rig.

if u dont want to SLI ur GP..... GTX 1080ti will be ur right choice to give ur mid fps for either 4k or ultrawide

for CPU my suggestion is to go for r7 1700 cause of ur heavily video editing

HDD: is it acceptable to go with 1TB SSD nowadays? Non NVme

PSU: need at least 500W

Looking forward for inputs, wanna buy it before my school term starts... back to teaching kids

Z35 is 2560X1080 not 4K. Good for watching videos and the VA panel has deep saturated colors.

X34 is 4K and has better color accuracy. It's the more popular choice, especially for gaming.

Edit: X34 is not 4K but rather WQHD 3440 x 1440. My bad.

I would suggest going for a Ryzen build as it has more cores and threads than Intel so video rendering/encoding/editing will be much faster.
