My 5yrs old PC has been unstable lately, random shutdowns and BSODs, I guess it might be PSU/ram dying. Was thinking might as well use this chance to upgrade but I'm not sure what components to get. Current rig is Intel i5-8400, Asus Prime H370M-Plus, 16Gb GSkill Trident Z RGB DDR4-2666, Zotac GTX 1080ti Mini. Will probably keep my 1080ti and HDDs. Mainly use my PC for work and gaming - my 1080ti still seems to be able to run most games at High/Medium at 3440x1440 at 60fps so I don't think its urgent to change. Budget probably $1200 max for CPU/mobo/ram (thinking to get 32gb)/PSU....what would u guys recommend?

Intel's Raptor Lake is supposed to launch soon while AMD's 7000 is launching end of this month. Might be worthwhile to wait two or three weeks and see what's available then.

If not into the latest and greatest then you might want to wait for the new stuff from Intel ,AMD etc to launch, then get their previous gen products at a discount.

There's going to be some major announcements from the companies in the coming months.

You can check what is the error through Windows event viewer.
Example if BOSD is bugcheck than mostly RAM issue.
Given the specs it should do fine but issue is that you are playing at 4K which the GTX 1080
can struggle.

The YouTuber is using the latest Intel 12th, GTX 1080 Ti Max is around 3Xfps for most games.

Yeah have tried reseating the RAM a few times but still having random shutdowns. Anyway I do think my PC is due for an upgrade.

Not aiming for latest or highest specs for sure, I'm ok to wait a bit for the next gen stuff to come out. Also not playing on 4k resolution, just 3440x1440 on my acer predator x34p which I think the 1080ti still can manage somewhat. What kind of specs should I be looking to get?

Can't really advise you much if you can wait for next gen stuffs to release because we need real user feedback when the new gens are out. But i think the AMD 7000 series are a little bit out of budget for you.

You should try looking at current Ryzen R7 5700X/5800X from amazon.sg. They are going for S$3XX cpu only. Maybe you can consider to work around these cpus.

That video you can use as rough gauge how GTX 1080 Ti handle 4k.
If random shutdown, have you check your CPU temp?
Are you using stock cooler or liquid cooler?

If liquid cooler, it could be the cooler have issues thus the PC keeps shutting down.
Try use this hardware monitor software to check your PC temps:

Using stock cooler and CPU temp average around 45 degrees when idling. Don't think its a temp issue since the random shutdowns can happen while idling or running a game.

Never used AMD cpu before so I'm not sure if I wanna switch now. Was looking at the intel i5 12600 - is this good enough for my purposes? And what is the minimum capacity for a PSU I should be getting?

I had these issues last time and I replaced my mobo CMOS battery to solve it. Try this solution first before upgrading.

If you are looking at 3080ti or 4080ti you should be getting at least a good quality 850W. I would go for 1000W just to be safe.

Depend on your budget as for PSU depend which graphic card are you getting.

Ah that's worth a try, thanks for the suggestion.

Is 650W or 750W enough if I keep my 1080ti (might consider upgrade to 3070 in the future)?

650w is enough for a 3070, way more than u need for a 1080ti. 750w is kind of overkill but still viable if u want to be super sure to not trip psu protections.

suggest you reinstall your windows and applications again and see how it goes. If it is hardware problem, them i think your needs are simple and any CPU that uses DDR4 should suffice. Keep everything except CPU and MB

I also agree with this method as the PC seems OK to handle the usage.
TS can do:
- Do memtest
https://www.memtest86.com/- Do a clean install of Windows as well as update the motherboard BIOS.
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/PRIME/PRIME-H370M-PLUS/HelpDesk_BIOS/Given the age of the PC, TS mobo BIOS should be out of date.

Swapped my ram out with spares, seems more stable now. I'll still upgrade my rig though, thinking of getting the below over the next couple of months as prices come down (hopefully):

Asus Prime H670-Plus D4
Intel i5 12600
G.Skill Trident Z RGB 3600Mhz 2x16Gb
Samsung 980 M2 NVME 1Tb

Rest of the components will be salvaged from existing rig. For the above specs, should I be getting a 550W or 650W PSU (if I wanna upgrade to 3070/3080 in the future)?

550w is barely enough for a 3070, 650w should be safer. if u get a quality 650w unit a 3080 is also viable, though some may argue getting an even higher wattage as they are quite notorious for transient power spikes.

as for the other parts, if u are considering 12600 non k, i would suggest getting the 12400 instead as it offers basically the same performance for cheaper. furthermore, u will likely be serviced better with a quality b660 mobo (eg msi pro b660m-a) rather than h670 as they are easier to find and generally cheaper; asus' prime series are pretty garbage in general anyway. it might also not be a bad idea to consider ddr5 mobo and ram, as budget ddr5 is only a little bit more expensive than reasonably fast ddr4. the performance on offer by either gen are equivalent now, but u have the option of upgrading to better ddr5 once it matures and becomes cheaper.
