Time Machine Backup over NAS

I also found an old 27GB partial Time Machine backup in the WD Mycloud. It was for my old Mac Mini 2011 and apparently it failed. Deleting it took quite some time.

Anyway, I will not use this WD Mycloud for Time Machine backup. I have got a 4TB 2.5inch WD Mypassport for the task.

SMB share is not slow at all for the Mac Mini M1.

I tried copying files from an Acer Swift 3 Dec 2017 Core i5-8250U Windows 10 laptop to the Mac Mini M1 with three Ubuntu 20.04 ISO files, it is really fast, I can see it is above 290MB/sec from the Activity Monitor. They link between the two are two Ugreen 2.5Gbe USB adapters.

For the other direction, my test was limited by the slow write speed of the Acer at about 200MB/sec.

Thanks everyone for contributing to the discussion. It’s been a busy year end / new year start but good thing is I did some spring cleaning and found numerous spare HDD and portable drives too.

First thing I did was to clean up my Mac HDD using the native ‘optimise storage’ function. To my horror there was a 460Gb ‘Migrated’ Photos Folder in my personal user folder. So happy to trash it to the bin. Once I finish this virtual spring cleaning, I will start exploring some of your suggestions.

Great stuff peeps, glad to see the Mac community here is still alive. I miss the old Mac User Sg group so much.

I miss MUGS too. It was dying out a bit and Apple Clinic came alive for a while. However, when the Mac became more mainstream, it sort of lost its niche status to become one of many machines out there.
