Is it safe to create a partition out from the original hdd just for time machine? Or should I attach an external hdd for time machine backup?

i am using a mbp.

iirc time machine will try n use up all e available space so if u want to use e external hdd for personal files it's better to partition it else e time machine stuff will get mixed up with yr data.

the whole idea behind time machine is to have a backup of your system, so if you do it on the original hdd and it spoil, then how?
