I am thinking of spending New Year in Japan, especially visiting Ise Jinja on New Year Day itself. Anybody has any experience to share? Is it worth going all the way there on the 1st or somewhere around Kyoto will be more interesting?

Anyone knows any good places to hike around Kansai area? It will be cool to do some hiking and see great natural beauty at the start of a new year!

Thinking of spending about 2 weeks. Probably will go to Kyoto and Takamatsu as well. The last time I was in Kyoto was 10 yrs ago and I will like to revisit. I have not been to Shikoku yet and so I should at least visit Takamatsu.

I might also spend a night on Koyasan just to experience some quiet time. :)

Have you done it before? Is it that 4d3n trek listed on the website you mentioned? It looks very interesting!

i only did a small part of it as day trip for a few hours. from Daimonzaka to Nachi Taisha, and from Yunomine onsen town to Hongu Taisha
this is my trip report:

tb-kumano website contain tonnes of info with lots of maps on the hiking route and the towns. and if u need any further help, u can email them. they have an angmo staff who can reply to ur queries and help with the planning

Thank you for your excellent suggestion! Yup I just emailed Tanabe Tourism Bureau to ask for more details. My current plan is to start hiking from Koyasan all the way to Nachi Taisha and then bus to Kii-Katsuura before taking the train to Ise. Without your suggestion, I wouldn't have thought of this. :s12::s12:
