To fix or to upgrade

I have a nearing 4year old desktop PC with the following specs:

- Intel i5-4590
- Gigabyte H97N itx WiFi
- 16gb ram ddr3
- Gtx980
- Corsair Mx100 SSD (boot)
- WD blue 1gb (secondary)


Since 2years+ ago the computer has been giving me quite a number of bsod followed by bootmgr not found errors. Most of the time they were resolved by restarting again a couple of times.

But recently it has been getting more frequent and worse, I have to restart or wait for a few hours before the computer is willing to boot back to windows 10.

Checked memtest86 and found no errors with ram. Crystaldiskinfo showed no errors but disk is given a 88%(Good) rating.

BSODs/bootmgr not found error usually happens when I :

- upload a 2gb+ video file to YouTube
- open more than 50+ tabs on chrome and other browsers (am a web dev by trade)
- open a big 4gb+ Adobe premiere file or a huge illustrator/Photoshop file from my secondary HDD.
-playing some games

For this case is this a ram or SSD problem?

If is ram problem would upgrade mobo/cpu/ram be a better choice as ddr3 isn't supported by newer mobos?

If you can, reinstall windows for the pc. During the reinstallation, delete all partition until it left with 1 single unallocated partition and proceed to install in that.

If still persist, then you should start troubleshooting hardwares. Can start with RAM. Borrow some ddr3 from your acquaintance, then see if problem still occur or not. Btw, you using 4x4gb or 2x8gb?

Chances are it is an SSD problem.

I just rebuilt my rig after something similar. Periodic freezes but SSD tested fine even with SMART extended test. Finally got invalid boot media error on power-up. Repartitioned and reformatted but could not install Windows on the SSD.

Swapped over to another SSD for OS and all is good again.

@singupingu I've tried reinstalling Windows10 some months back but it didn't fix the problem.

Am using 2x8gb ram on a mini-itx mobo. Ran memtest86 over the night yesterday and the results is 0 errors. Will try ask around see if friends have ddr3 (will be unlikely though since most I know already upgraded to ddr4)

If is ram problem... It feels no worth it to buy ddr3 ram since it isn't "future-proof" (can't bring over to new computer when upgrade)?

I think so too, now the system is back up working normally again. But with it bsod/fail to find boot drive every now I think it might be better to just change it.

What Koenig168 said is true as well.. Get a new ssd most likely solve the issue since you reinstall windows and problem still exist. 2x8gb also never unlikely that one of the stick dead as it pass memtest86 flawless.

No new rig will support ddr3 anymore (pertaining new system that are LGA1151 200-series and above for Intel and socket AM4 for AMD as all of them are running DDR4)
