please allow me to hijack.

going tokyo in mid apr. shortlisted 3 areas to stay. Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ueno.

I like the area with many shops especially eating place at night. The last round i went i stay at shinjuku sunroute and next to it was a metro which i like but it was sold out.

managed to still find hotels in that 3 areas within my budget but do you all think ueno-otetsu Fresa Inn Ueno-Okachimachi (near ueno park and ameyoko) and shibuya-Hotel unizo is gd area to stay?

ur budget kinda wide leh, ueno is 80+ and shiobuya is 160+. meaning u can also opt for 160 plus hotel in ueno. in any case as long as u are close to a metro and the stop is not too far away from the major hubs like ueno, akihabara, shinjuku etc it should be ok.........

Actually my initial budget is around 150 a night. Solo traveller. Not sure is it the sakura period or because its too near the trip date.

For a decent review 3 star Even ueno is around 150. Shibuya and shinjuku is around 170.

I like the atmosphere in shinjuku the last time I stay. But maybe can try shibuya this round. Is ueno lively at night?

Yup, I'm pretty sure that the price hike is due to the Sakura season. I booked single room in Shinjuku on 10 Feb (I booked 1 month in advance), the price of my solo room at IBIS Shinjuku was about $130/night.

My other room (22 Feb) at Citadines Central Shinjuku was $160/night for a double room, but only occupied by me.

More expensive for Citadines because it’s a weekend and a bigger room.

Yup totally. Even though its a double room, its still cheaper than TS's $170/night pricing.
Heard good stuff abt citadines but is sold out on my dates too. Now it seems that the unizo at shibuya is sold out too.

Probably gonna take the shinjuku apa brand hotel at 170 ish

Hmmm... Somehow I felt that the customer service at Citadines isn't as good as other hotels I stayed during my Japan trip, including other budget hotels.

The reception staff at Citadines greeted the ang moh uncle when he entered the hotel lobby (as the ang moh was walking in front of me), but totally ignored me... I see their service like that i hurt sia.

I’ve seen the size of some APA rooms - less than 10sqm. That’s way too small. And it’ll never be in my list as the owner is promoting right-wing views, denying the massacre in Nanjing.

The staff might not be a Japanese. I’ve gotten horrible service from PRC staff in Nagoya and in Tokyo - JCB Plaza, retail and F&B. They refused to communicate properly and chose to speak Mandarin to me and my mister. Quite pushy in sales even though they knew nothing much about the products too. My friend complained similar treatment in Burberry Ginza some years back too. Generally most Japanese staff are okay.

Try visiting outskirts instead. We’ve been received warmly from different prefectures in our past trips out of the cities, especially onsen towns. And the locals are usually surprised to see us visiting their shops, hotels and attraction spots, they’d make small talk with us. We’ve even received sweets when boarding a ferry with elderly residents from a small fishing island in Kagawa.

Haha you're right! The reception staff was not Japanese! Japanese staff are really very polite and well mannered.

Speaking of that I don't think I will want to stay at Citadines for my next visit to Shinjuku. Can try out other hotels in the area.

And yes, Japanese hotels are really tiny, even staying in a double room by myself, I find the space tiny.

I stya in apa akihabara last trip.. Smallest room ever.. Not even space for wardrobe and I can't even open my luggage. Have to do it on my bed. The toilet is so small and it resemble the toilet cabin on my cruise. 🤣 Even then there's a smallest bathtub I have seen. If solo, I might stay there though.

Hahaha my solo room at IBIS Shinjuku was small too. I took pictures of my tiny bathroom and whatsapp my friend... He told me don't need to feel so depressed, just imagine i'm on a cruise toilet that comes with a bathtub (instead of a shower only). :s13:
