Do not wish to waste the super long weekend in August and want to have a quick getaway. Wish to go Tokyo to replenish some of my stuff and although been there a few times, never in summer. Is their summer really unbearable? To put things in perspective, I have been to Seoul in August before, it WAS unbearable. Alternatively if not Tokyo and had to choose, hongkong or Taipei be better? Melbourne was a choice but not possible for 4 days as never been to Melbourne before whereas other places have been before

It is really hot there in Tokyo for a few weeks in summer! Not unbearable for me though. Just a different kind of heat. Dry, even the wind, if any.

I'm from Tokyo, and believe me, it's unbearable during summer especially August.
We have high humidity plus so many people so it's really uncomfortable.
If you're transporting in the morning, avoid the rush hour train. It's disaster...
After 2011 earthquake, we can't really lower the AC below 26 degree so it's just getting worse...
Hokkaido is very nice in summer, with temperature around 25-30 degree during the day and 15-25 at the night. And it's relatively dry there.
But avoid 2nd and 3rd week of August to go there, since it's holiday season and can be crowded. (we take vacation at the same time)
Have fun!

i think if TS is going for a few days during summer is still fine...but if you are going for a week or more and you are doing mainly outdoor activities...the heat which is stinging (the lack of cloud cover?) can really sap your energy...I would advise anyone from going Japan except for Hokkaido during the summer mths

I would say is similar, very hot and sunny. Plus is typhoon season. So bascially not good months for travel, unless u go higher altitude. Even then, the UV is very strong.

Mid July and entire August = dry heat. scorching bright and hot. you would need to slather sunblock and sunglasses are definitely a must.

What about going Tokyo but spending most time indoor shopping ( that's my reason for going anyway, not sight seeing as been there 5 times. Grocery shopping is my goal) then around 7pm then Venture outdoors. This doable?

Since u been there for a few times and summer is unbearable for u. Go Australia is better choice. The airfare tickets for both flight are almost the same anyway.

Personally I will avoid travelling to a country where it is having the same hot season like SG.
