I used to register through Google domain now they changed google domain (USD 10 per domain) registration to Squarespace the cost now doubled.

Looking for alternate options. Can you share some of the popular and Reliable Domain Registrar? Prefer low cost.

Thanks

Never done this but many Youtube videos recommend NameCheap.

There are of course other choices like Godaddy.

I use cloudflare, they sell you the domain name at cost and they have free DDNS w/ a very well documented API.

I used to use Freenom to get free top level domains for use with free Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud. I was also using the free Cloudflare services with the free domains. I was playing with hosting VPNs (like Wireguard, Shadowsocks, V2Ray and Trojan) and PiHole/Adguard on the free cloud. I now host Pihole/Adguard and Wireguard VPN servers locally and use free DDNS services.

But Freenom exited domain registration business after losing ICANN accreditation last year and settled with Meta on a legal battle this year.

For this kind of throwaway domains (not mission critical), NameCheap seems to be the way to go if one does not want to use free DDNS services (no top level domains for DDNS). But for real business needs, maybe Cloudflare is the way to go.

From SIMBA thread --> maybe getting a cheap domain name and using Cloudflare Tunnel is a good way to work around CGNAT limitation if you want to host someting to serve the public.

1. Some good info about working around CGNAT limitation if you want to host something to the public, without getting static IPv4 which is anyway not provided by SIMBA, and without using IPv6.

1) Self hosting and using cloudflare tunnel --> just need a domain name

Actually use cloudflare tunnels, might not need static IP anymore. Just that only limited ports available. Not as flexible. It works for normal http/https

yea using cloudflare tunnel as reverse proxy for hosting is easier.

if you want to host your own site, sure have to protect your network + vlan etc

2) Pay for a hosting service like a cheap VPS provider

nowadays vps can get for as low as 3.50 euros per month, enough for simple hosting bah.

Just wondering for home lab users here, do you still pay for a VPS provider? Or just self hosting (and use Cloudflare Tunnel)?

I used to use free Google Cloud free tier and Oracle cloud free tier. But not using them any more now. I was playing with Pi-hole initialy and then VPN servers (wireguard and OpenVPN) and socket proxy servers (Shadowsocks, V2ray, etc) last time.

Oracle Cloud free tier was quite generouns but they would keep deleting your VM instances if not used for a while.

Reference: I was playing with Pi-hole initially.

Just search again and it seems to me NameSilo is now listed as a good alternative to NameCheap.
https://www.namesilo.com/

Cloudflare pricing is passthru/ at cost.

I think I using namesilo also but have some sort of reseller account or what. The pricing seems like much cheaper compared to their list price

Just renewed a .net domain at 11.85 USD. Think cloudflare even cheaper .

There are dirt cheap domains, especially for the first year.

Renewal can be more expensive though.

Example: 1.111B Class domains
https://gen.xyz/1111b

Just checked 128888888.xyz is at US$0.84 for the first year from NameCheap.

For those who get a real domain name (not a throwaway one for testing purposes), what do you do with the domain name?

Are you using paid hosting services (including GPS), or self hosting?
