Torn between multiple choices

Hey all, I've been snooping around and have come to a crossroads.

Background is that I'm going to UK to study for the next 3 years, and also am looking for an upgrade from my current Asus K43SV. (14" reliable but dying on me baby)

I've narrowed it to about a 2k budget, with these options in mind:

AfterShock XM17

Asus G55VW

I'm also looking at the Chronos 7 and the Y500, but I would really prefer the option for an SSD upgrade along with HDD capabilities.

Looking at portability issues - I will be bringing it to and fro on a flight at least once a year, and probably to campus/library which is a 20 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride from my hall in UK.

The reason for the gaming performance capabilities is that I was born a gamer and I can't take slow crap, even if it's just for work and studying.

Weight isn't really a bother to me as my current K43 is a hefty 2.8kg...

Games I play include your standard FPS like BF3, Metro, Borderlands etc and MMOs - WoW especially.

Do let me know which way I should swing as (no offence) I'm not very trusting of AfterShock left. I'm going down to PC Show next month to try out for myself though.

XM17 is more upgradeable if I am not mistaken. But do note both laptops on your list don't offer cutting edge graphics. Not sure of your definition of slow "crap", but the GTX660M shld offer reasonable gaming performance, depending on the game settings.

I'm not demanding like ultra settings on skyrim and crysis so im good with high settings.. at least I don't have to play on low settings on WoW all the time I happy alr

if your going to the UK, i would suggest maybe you wanna get your laptop over there coz theres simply more choices available at UK. U have access to sager, clevo, ibuypower, cyberPowerPc..not to mention that laptop prices in EU is cheaper than SG.

i worry about international warranty as well :/

and i dont wanna go there then xfer all my data etc etc i would assume that i'd be busy with alot of other stuff settling in

Even high settings can be tough for these bleeding edge game with entry level GTX cards. Typically, rule of thumb is that these demanding fps games run on medium on the 660 / 650 mobile cards, and high/ultra (high for crysis) on the top end cards.

The G55VW is a full kilo heavier than your 'hefty' K43, excluding the weight of the power brick, while the XM17 will weigh in around 3.2 kilos so at least be mentally prepared to carry heavier things.

Oh ya do note that G55VW is mSATA + 1 HDD so if you do want a SSD with HDD capabilities you'll need an mSATA SSD

Lastly, a 660M (which both laptops use) wont cut it on 1080p resolutions for FPS games like Crysis if you pick high settings. Your framerates will probably struggle to hit 30.

2nd that. even desktop Gtx680 struggles with crysis 3 maxed. OP rope physics FTW
