Hi, gurus,

Have been a while since I meddle with DIY setups.

Been looking at the motherboards and memory available. It seems that currently MB all have 4 memory slots and the memory that are being sold are max 8GB : which means I can only have max 32GB RAM on my system.

64GB and higher RAM systems are no popular/required now?

Many cheaper ones are two slots only, and nowadays this can be due to the limit set by the CPU or chipset.

8GB is often due to DDR3 standard limitation. Come DDR4, 16GB modules will become more easily available.

Currently there is little benefit for 16GB of ram or higher.

Depends. Not everyone needs to drive a 6-seater car even though they can afford it. Those with a larger family will gladly need it while those just ferryibg themselves or have a small family will feel that a 6-seater to them is a waste of money and space.

Similarly, 32GB and 64GB RAM setups appeal to different people. U certainly dont require 32GB of RAM to run most games, but not having enough RAM to run certain applications like video editing programs and/or virtual machines is simply asking for trouble.

I hope you do not have the thinking that more Rams = more faster Pc.

Generally, ram is a personal thing. It really depends on how much you use.

- casual users will be like 4gb Rams are enough.
- mainstream gamers who does nothing but games probably will look between 8gb to 16gb.
- drawing apps like photoshops etc, will tend to have anywhere between 32gb to 64gb unless they no money.

16gb is more than enough. what are you going to do with 32gb?

there are some mb with 8 ram slots, designed around the Haswell-E platform.

There are also ram modules with 16GB capacities but they're mostly available overseas.

Is 32gb or 64gb overkill? For the average gamer or desktop user, yes. For some, it's the more the merrier.

Note that such a rig is probably north of $5k, and that doesn't include the supporting cast.
