Unless you are a hard-on for changing trains, wait 6-9 months. There is a possibility for things to improve dramatically. The electrification and double-tracking project for Gemas to JB may complete in that time-frame and the ETS may run between JB and KL and perhaps even directly to Butterworth or Padang Besar. You get to experience a faster trip since you will not need a change at Gemas and ETS is faster than the diesel type.

An alternative is to take the jungle line from JB to Pasir Mas. Cross the border on foot at Rantau Panjang ad walk to the Thai station at Sungei Kolok. Look up seat61.com for the Thailand and Malaysia sections. I did this trip in reverse starting from Hadyai, southwards. This south-eastern part of Thailand is restive and stations on the route have troop emplacements. Very interesting to see armed troops boarding the train too.

Well, buses are faster than trains, and cheaper than both trains and flights. Less than 2 days. :)

Actually such route is for people like me. Semi-retired so a lot of time. I think young pple have $ but no time.
Agree, if you have time, take this route and plan a few stop along the way, it will be very fun and interesting.

Yet another alternative is to fly to Bangkok from Senai. I did not do a air fare comparison though.
