Hi all

have been using TransferWise for foreign currency transfer to overseas. Now there is this Debit Card and wonder if anyone has used it to withdraw foreign currency? Is the rate good? Compared to Revolut for example (still waiting for the card)?

Thanks.

I received an email to apply for transferwise debit card. I just applied :)
So this along with Revolut will be the new landscape for such borderless transactions

Transferwise's debit/ATM Mastercard, now offered in Singapore, looks quite competitive in Singapore. In simple terms the deal works like this:

1. Deposit Singapore dollar funds into a non-interest bearing Transferwise account using free, domestic FAST, GIRO, or PayNow fund transfers. Funds should credit pretty quickly on weekdays (but not on weekends or on Singapore public holidays, so just bear that in mind if you travel).

2. Spend those funds directly using your debit Mastercard at any merchant that accepts Mastercard, in any currency. The currency conversion is performed automatically, at that instant, for a reasonable fee (compared to Singapore norms). NOTE: This won't be as favorable as ICBC's Global Travel Mastercard for merchant spending, but among Singapore-issued debit cards it's quite competitive.

3. Withdraw up to S$350 worth of cash from ATMs every 30 days without any Transferwise-imposed fees, and again with a reasonable currency conversion rate. However, you'll still want/need to search for ATMs that have either zero or at least lower local operator fees. Thailand will still be a problem, as an example.

4. Although you can convert currencies within the Transferwise account any time you wish, you don't have to. There's no particular advantage in doing so unless you really feel strongly about locking in a particular conversion rate. I wouldn't bother. The lower cost automatic conversions compare very favorably against UOB's MightyFX, YouTrip, and RHB's TravelFX which are way too complicated (and more expensive).

Transferwise debit card spending should be the most expensive as it has higher fees than youtrip and revolut i believe

How do you figure that?

Yes, I know, Youtrip advertises wholesale currency exchange rates and automatic conversions at those rates. It looks pretty good on paper. But real world cardholder experience unfortunately suggests otherwise as reported in the Youtrip threads.

Revolut seems to be very competitive, though. There's also InstaRem entering the fray.

Biggest advantage of revolut is that it allows topup using credit card.

YouTrip: 0.3% spread for transaction usage

Transferwise: 0.7% spread for atm withdrawal in malaysia. I have not used for transaction yet

So far I'm happy with Youtrip. It uses mastercard wholesale fx rate which can be verified against mastercard online calculator. But I only used it in M'sia so far.

The bank also imposes how much can be withdrawn each time at their ATM, at least in M'sia. For eg, in JB, at one Maybank ATM, the limit was RM1,500. So fee of S$5 (~Rm15) works out to ~1% withdrawal fee. This is still better than Revolut's non-free ATM withdrawal fee.

Oh, there is an ATM withdrawal fee for Revolut? How much is it? I thought it is free up to $350 per month.

Yup youtrip has atm withdrawal fee. And thus I didn’t use for atm withdrawal. I used YouTrip for transactional purpose since it is 0.3%

You can use ICBC global MasterCard. You get paid 0.5%.

What's this 0.3%? AFAIK, there's no transaction charge for youtrip usage.
