Transport throughout Taiwan

Dear all,

When my wife and myself were doing our calculation on transport cost for travelling around Taiwan just from Taipei to Taichung (our itinerary areas), we realised the amount can take up quite a substantial part of our expenses. The costs include thsr, day trips with local drivers, etc. We would like to ask for cost efficient ways to cover the itinerary.

With a family of 4, including 2 kids, we intend to cover transport during our Taiwan in the following manner:

Taoyuan Airport-Taipei City (thsr)
Taipei-Hualien-Taipei (private day trip)
Taipei-Miaoli (thsr)
Miaoli-Taichung (thsr)
Taichung and surrounding areas (private day trip x 2 days)
Taichung-Qingjing (taxi)
Taichung-Taipei (thsr)

Would appreciate it if anyone can share cost effect to ways to cover this itinerary? Thanks!

What are you going to do in Miaoli? Flying Cow Ranch?

There are direct Nantou buses departing Taichung HSR Station to Cingjing.

Taichung can get around on public transport, or if you are going out of Taichung, the Nantou buses.

Taoyuan Airport-Taipei City not HSR, but airport mrt, cost about 160 ntd per pax, kids don't know got free or not (check). Taxi to Taipei about 1000 - 1200 ntd.

Taipei-Hualien-Taipei (private day trip) Can take train to Hualien, then take taxi for your tour, should be cheaper than book whole day trip.

Taichung, you can choose those ulu attractions to done in 1 day, just book a taxi/ driver. Next day can diy.

Taichung-Qingjing, can take bus
Cingjing to Taipei main station can take Ego bus cost 600 ntd per pax, kids I don't know.

BTW: Hualien can take train to Miaoli to cut cost instead of Taipei to and fro.

Looking at plans. Better to cross from hualien to Taichung then back to flying cow ranch. If judging from number of days, seems more than 7days.
Has it crossed your mind of a self drive?
If not, stay in Taipei ba. There are still plenty to do. If not still can go by local inter-city bus. Cheapest mode of transport.
