I'm a big supporter of Samsonite and American Tourister.. Been using these two brands since I started travelling and they've never failed me. Since American Tourister is under Samsonite, their quality should be not bad. They also have free wheels replacement service, so if your wheels spoil (which is quite unlikely 'cos I'm a very clumsy person and my luggages are always overweight, 30kg) you can get them replaced at their outlets for free:)

Bought my 29" American tourister feather lite at Giant for ard 90 bucks

It's hard to imagine a 29" luggage qualifying as "feather lite". What kind of feathers are we talking about here ?

I don't quite understand why people bring such big luggages. What could you possibly need on your trip that occupies so much space ?

You may need a big luggage if you are travelling with your family or the duration of the trip is long.

I have been using Eminent hard case large luggage for many years (around 12 or 13 years). Only changed 2 wheels 2 years back (around $12 each) at their service centre. Wheels will crack after many years.

Full load is around 23 or 24kg.

If you are buying luggage try to buy 4 wheels instead of 2 wheels, it would be easier for you to move around.

Happy shopping.

I understand you'll need big luggages when travelling with kids, but I often see childless travellers with huge luggages and solo travellers with huge 75L backpacks on their backs.

I don't know what the heck is in their bags, but I'm sure it's torture to lug those around. No matter how long you travel, you actually need the same things as a short trip, except maybe more toiletries. Surely this does not contribute much to the giant bags that I see people lugging all the time.

If you're not a light packer like butterbarter, one thing you need to consider when getting your luggage is how the bloody thing handles when it's packed and heavy.

I have a samsonite and even when it was 32kg (I was carrying 2 cast iron pots back), it was quite ok to manoeuvre it. Sure, when you have to lift it into the cab, it's still a pain, but when you're wheeling it around, it doesn't feel that much more difficult than when it's like 15kg.

Compare that with another 4 wheel luggage (some japanese name that I couldn't remember) that I have. It's smaller and even when it's lightly packed, it's a lot more difficult to lug around. Gotten to the point where I just use my samsonite - even if i'm only filling up half the suitcase (or less).

And you'd be surprised at how light some of the samsonite hard cases are. It's not much heavier than the canvass ones sometimes - in fact, I think some of the cheaper brands' canvass ones might be heavier if you compare same size. Of cuz it lightens your wallet by a lot more so look for promos if you have the time (the current promo is not that great).

I think American Tourister luggage is not durable. I got it during the OCBC Deposit promotion. But after 1 usage, the handle drop off. I read that it got waranty so i wrote in to their head office in Singapore, hopefully they will repair it.

Even those no brand luggage is more durable. I use so many times no spoil.

Travel Luggage - "Wheelie" Bags

Suitcases with wheels are the way to go and even the hard cases can be very light.

USA brands still on the heavy side because they check in by number (and dimensions of bags) whilst the rest of the world does it by weight.

Rimowa are the most expensive and at other end of the scale there are suitcases under Sin$100.

I just bought one ($99) to try; I can see the main potential weaknesses are that the material is thin and the zip might not be strong enough if I pack heavy items. This one, Swiss Polo was made in China.

A friend bought a Carlton, slightly more expensive, made in India.

Let's see which lasts.

Since when USA side go by number of bag? It has been weight all the time. The fact that they didn't charge u on excess weight does does not imply no rules. These days fuel is costly, they do follow the rules strictly.

Luggage

I got my Swiss Polo exchanged at Mustafa (faulty lock) and went to USA. On way out TSA left a notice saying they had to break the lock because it would not open, so maybe the SWiss Polo locks are not as advertised (TSA-Complaiant). I will visit Mustafa once back in SIN.

Aside from lock troubles (2 bags now) rest seems OK.

So sometimes cheap is not necessarily OK.

But best not to buy bags that are too big as they are unwieldy and in USA they go by pieces and each piece must not weight more than 70lbs.

Weight and manageability also matter

I bought a large SWISS POLO ($99) from Mustafa and had to change ti within 24 hours because the lock (TSA0002) was faulty. I also bought a smaller with same lock.

On my return trip from USA TSA opened my Swiss Polo and left a note saying they had to damage the lock, so I used a cable tie instead as I use the lock only to make sure the zips stay zipped.

As Swiss Polo and many other are China-made maybe their so-called TSA compliant locks are in fact not compliant but lousy locks.

Also size is not the only criteria - some smaller suitcases have zips that allow up to 2" more depth. This means a bit more luggage room.

Also I find if the bags are too big, they become unwieldy to move and to put into some car boots. I am going to stick to 24"-26", 28" max if you must.
