Jakarta deserves more tourists from Singapore. It has been a long way since those tumultuous years after the fall of Suharto. Great, affordable food even at high-end places. Cafe Batavia. Mangga Dua, Blok M…… Dunia Fantasi.

Stay Jakarta for a period of 5 years! Best places are those mediocre restaurants as the prices are very affordable! Tebet, Manga Dua, Manga Besar, can also goto Pondok Indah areas..sorry no photo as that was 20 years ago during my early 20s!
Yes, I remember Tebet, Pondoh Indah and Pondok Gede areas. Pondok Indah residence and Pondok Gede residence were the Elite housing areas in Jakarta back then in 1991/92 maybe onwards. I'm not sure about now. There were many restaurants in those areas. I used to patronized Pondok Gurame Restaurant near Pondok Indah. It was an exclusive restaurant.

I had frequently flown from Singapore to Jakarta in 1991/92 back then. Usually during weekends or Singapore public holidays. I would check into Horizon Hotel at Ancol next to Dunia Fantasi. It was an exclusive well known 5 star hotel amongst the locals and tourists. Its also quite near to an exclusive Hai Lai Night Club. I remember watching Anita Sarawak performance there too.

While I was there I would book the hotel limousine with a driver to go places in Jakarta, Puncak and Tangkuban Parahu the active volcanic crater and the hot spring swimming pool in Bandung.

I had also chartered a boat to visit those island resorts of Pulau Seribu off the coast of Ancol/Jakarta.

After frequently visited Jakarta I decided to buy a landed property in Tomang at Jalan Rawa Kepa. I can't remember the street section of RT/RW. However, I do remember in front of the house there was a playground/garden and there was this big HERO Supermarket not far from the house. I bought it under someone else name. I think I was a frequent visitor/resident in Jakarta about 1.5 years.

Then on 20/8/92 I decided to travel to other parts of Java and Indonesia. I ended up settling down in Bali from December 1992 to December 1995. I had lived in Indonesia about 3.5 years.

Back in the 80s and 90s Indonesia during Suharto era International tourists were given 3 months tourist visa. So maybe if Indonesia could revert back to that 3 months tourist visa it would help to boost their tourism industry again.

Yes I did. However, I don't know how to speak bahasa Betawi or Sunda. Mainly, I spoke Bahasa Indonesia and added some East Javanese words and while in Bali some Balinese words. I think you would know this statement, "MAS di Jawa BELI di Bali." :ROFLMAO:

Yes they are especially in Java...when they speaks Bahasa Indonesia or Javanese its as though the tone and words spoken are like a melody like music. Frankly speaking Bahasa Indonesia is pleasant to hear because the way they speaks is so refine and courteous a much better language than Bahasa Melayu/Malaysia.

Javanese and Sundanese speak in a softer tone unlike Bataknese, Acehnese and Madurese! The Bahasa Indonesia is still the easiest to understand though..

East Java, Yogyakarta and Solo when they speak Javanese very refine, courteous and respectful but the most refine language I feel is in Yogyakarta and Solo because these places are the Royal Family generation (The Kraton) and heritage. While in East Java or in central Java most people don't speak Bahasa Indonesia but Javanese :ROFLMAO:

Ok thats very is good experience and exposure. Did you explore to other parts of Java while you were there?
Normal tourist cities like Surabaya, Yogja, Malang, Padang, Medan, Bandung and lastly visited a Chinese Indonesian at Sinkawang! Sinkawang is more like a Chinese settlement, poorer than their counterparts from Jakarta!

At least you managed to visit Kalimantan in Borneo. When I was living in Bali my dream was to visit Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Makasar and etcs towards further east of Indonesia Archipelago but I didn't manage to fulfil it because due to personal unforeseen circumstances I returned to Singapore in December 1995. All by overland and ferry trips.

After 20/8/92 a few days later after that I went for a bag packed travelling to see other parts of Java and beyond I guess.

The places I had visited while in Indonesia and there were many other small towns that I had passed through..

1. Bekasi
2. Bogol
3. Bandung
4. Cirebon
5. Samarang
6. Solo
7. Jogya
8. Madiun
9. Sarangan
10. Jombang
11. Mojoagung
12. Blitar
13. Lumajang
14. Jember
15. Surabaya - Sidoarjo
16. Malang
17. Batu
18. Situbondo
19. Pasir Putih
20. Banyuwangi
21. Bali
22. Lombok - Mataram & Gili Trawangan

Sumatera
21. Lampung - Tanjung Karang
22. Palembang
23. Jambi
24. Pekan Baru
25. Dumai

I actually needed to refer to Indonesia map to recall because it was so long ago back in 1992 to 1995...

Singkawang has a reputation among other Indonesian Chinese as being a depressing place for its Chinese inhabitants, particularly its womenfolk. I hear it is easy to visit from Kuching and historically it was part of a Chinese republic formed at Pontianak. It should be quite interesting to visit Singkawang and Pontianak.

U are definitely right! Many poor ethnic Chinese people are living there..I can't say very poor but it's like the Chinese living in the 60s or 70s!
