Hello forum,

I spent all of my day reading and researching and trying to come up with a good build. So far this is what I've got:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212X 82.9 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card
Case: NZXT Phantom 630 Windowed Edition (Black) ATX Full Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

I'd like to be able to play MGSV and Witcher 3 on Ultra. I also want to use it to stream gameplay, video editing and 3D rendering. The video editing and 3D rendering takes a backseat to playing games on Ultra though, as I'm used to waiting a long time for stuff to render.

Also, I've been told to switch out the Nvidia card for an AMD R9 390. Upon researching though I found out that the 390 swept the 970 across the board in all the benchmarks I looked at. Though I also found out that the 970 can be overclocked to perform the same as, if not better, than the 390 but at lower wattage. I'm not sure if I'll need the extra VRAM that comes with the 390 though. I might be willing to go up to a GTX 980 if it's within budget.

In any case I'm not too attached to the parts inside but I'd really like to keep the NXZT Phantom case because I think it looks cool.

Some other info: I have an AOC monitor that runs at 1920x1080 that I exclusively use for games and movies. I have another Samsung monitor that runs at 1680x1050 that I use for utility. I'm not sure if it's worth it for a monitor upgrade now since I don't think this setup will run at 4k anyway. I might hand the Samsung over to my brother since I plan on giving him this computer once I'm done with the new build. Either that or I'd turn this current one into a home cinema/steam machine.

My budget is around 2-3k SGD.

Sorry for the long message forum. Thanks for all your help!

From the way you write out the parts, looks like you are planning to get some of your parts from amazon

Forfeit the 212X, your budget can get a decent liquid cooler from coolermaster/corsair.

Psu get the g2 variant from evga. Really solid in build quality and hearsay got discount on amazon.

Since you are doing video editing and stuff, why not get a hdd to store your work as well.

Hello! Actually, no, I figure with conversion + shipping from America it would be quite ridiculous to get parts from Amazon. I was just going to go down to my friendly neighbourhood PC shop and see whether he could get the parts for me. If he wasn't able to get anything I could switch em' out but he's pretty reliable.

I'm not really big on liquid cooling, but is it idiot proof? I don't really plan on overclocking the CPU like crazy either. As far as I understood it, liquid cooling seems pretty superfluous unless you're running some sort of super machine.

G2 over the GS? I'm super clueless when it comes to PSUs...

I have an old 1TB Black from WD that's holding up pretty well, I may get another Blue/Black if I run out of storage though.

Thanks for all the advice!

Did you choose that motherboard for its Thunderbolt ports?

Hey! Not at all. Though I did see that it featured Thunderbolt. Isn't Thunderbolt the cable that Apple uses? Now that you mention it, is there any point to this Thunderbolt stuff, or am I paying some nonsensical premium for technology not adopted commonly? Thanks dude!

Some of the parts local shop may not have like your evga psus and phantom 630 may be phased out already.

Look out for free shipping items on amazon, and discounts on Lazada or QOO10; you do not have to buy everything from sls

While superfluous, so is a overclockable processor and having an oc'able processor with a mid tier air cooled heat sink at a high end budget is quite a mismatch.

Would free shipping on Amazon ship all the way here? The way I understood it is that it would only ship within America, then I'd have to get Singpost to ship it over here.

I see your point. Maybe it's time I changed my view on OCing. I always though it would lower the lifespan of the parts. Should I OC when the computer starts showing signs of age while running newer games, or all the time?

Thanks again mate!

Liquid cooling is idiot proof if yr getting the typical closed loop. It's maintenance free and not difficult to install. Reality is u don't need it unless yr overclocking. Or u just want better temps. But the Intel cpu is designed to run within limits with the stock cooler.

Superfluous or not is subjective as these kinds of things are up to your personal preference. Like ppl can spend $500 on a casing for the sake of it when a $50 case will do the job. So it's really an individual thing.

Amazon ships some items free, especially GPU. As u go to checkout, it will show whether there's free shipping or will ship to SG. If not, u will then have to use a forwarder, like Singpost etc. Some will ship to SG but will have to pay shipping.

No, amazon will settle everything from within us till your door step.

IMO oc is more of a fun thing to do nowadays than the older days of squeezing the most performance out of your build.

Oc may (i.e. there's a chance and varies from person to person) make your components wear alot faster.
