Hi there,

another thread, i searched and saw some asking similar, but were quite old.

thought maybe out of date, so started a new one.

though just got a cd player, and enjoying it, but already thinking about this, so free now, might as well do some research.

budget all in $7/800 (not a lot but i hope can get a half decent one)

turntable
phono
cables

i've been reading and there seems to be the few below that keep popping up.

Rega P1
Project debut carbon
U turn orbit

but only first 2 avail locally (i think).

would prefer new, cos i noob, dunno how to install/ setup/ check 2nd hand ones (condition and stuff), and also so many moving parts.

any suggestions?

thanks!

going into turntable is a poisonous exercise. LOL

The sky is the limit for when comes to listening to vinyl.
You have to consider the software (aka LP/vinyls)
you also have to consider the hardware
You also have to consider the maintenance

of course the music is beautiful, if you have the $$$. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. There is no such thing as I only want to spend $700 or $7000. The sky is the limit.

I suggest go Adelphi and check it out. Buy second hand ones. You can stretch further.

this one is quite good. The cartridge is around 400 or more.

Ask me and i can answer u.

Firstly, record is very different from CD sound.

Actually i regret going to turntable. Of course, it's quite subjective when listening to analog or digital music.

Turntable is a very expensive hobby and I would advise u to get a cheap beginner model first.

LPs are also not cheap and most important is what kind of music u listen to because most of the LPs out there are English so if u are into Kpop, Jpop, Chinese or Cantonese, u will be disappointed because it's really not a lot of LPs out there. Even if there's, u are going to pay an expensive price.

Maybe before u really wanted to venture into this hobby, u can make a trip to those LPs shop and take a look first. Chat with the shop owner, they are very helpful.

And also u need to know how to setup your turntable, it's not a must but u will need to learn how to change the cartridge when it's due, levelling, speed adjustment and etc.

The future is streaming player which is cheap and convenient but then it's digital so it's different feel.

And also so dumb digitally mastered records...

What's the point...

So actually really no point going to vinly unless one really got time to do some ritual and seat down with a cup of whisky

But if u like mechanical ... Especially u are a mechanical engineer/technician

Tweak tonearm .. needle adjustment all these are really pretty fun

mostly listen to english stuff, jazz, soul, vocals, so i think i'll be fine.

i'm not an expert mechanically, ride a bicycle and try to install or fix stuff on it. that kind of thing. but of course with someone to learn from, or something would be best.

i also understand what you mean about digitally mastered records, the reissues and stuff. i think i might get some to see what difference there is.

i do sit down and have a beer and listen, no wiskey (my wife likes that better), but yes, would need time to enjoy the music, no kids sure help in this aspect.

so looking at it, vinyl seems to be right for me. :D

Like i said, the sky is the limit.

let me counteract some of the discussions
changing the cartridge - nah, not in your lifetime unless you want to upgrade or you accidentally break it. A cart last for a long time.

levelling - unless you love banging your turntable rack, levelling is pretty straight forward. Unless you have a LP12, then you might have to it is up properly first time.

speed adjustment - no need. it is either 33 or 45rpm. No need to adjust. Most turntable today are pretty accurate. Even a Garrard 301 or 401 can be adjusted easily

Tonearm adjustment - do once and forget about it.

Like i said, the sky is the limit. My advice is get a reasonable good hardware then you do not have to upgrade all the time. Buy second hand as there will be people suffering from upgraditis.

As for software, of course if you like first pressing, the price is always very expensive. If you into Canton pop, old chinese music and Teresa teng, hahaha, the price is even more expensive. But if you are not, that is not going to be problem.

Maintenance for the stylus is the most important. You need to clean it regularly after use. You can use
ONZOW ZeroDust
or the Last liquid.

And also u need to maintain your record clean at all time as it will give u a better sound quality and also improved the lifespan of your cartridge.

With a budget of $700, u may want to check out the Technics and Project model. I think Rega Is out of the budget. Budget is a bit tight and u only can go for those all in one and also need to take into consideration the phono amplifier unless your current amplifier had the phono input.

Wanna ask about turntables as well.

- Parents have a lot of old school LPs that they wanna listen to but current 80s-90s turntable is damaged. Is there any basic cheap turntable to recommend? They are not audiophile.
- Does all current turntables need to connect to a speaker or have built in speaker?

Im taking reference from Treoo but seems like their listed Audio Technica models are obsolete.
