TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Central Weather Administration said it was expecting to issue land warnings for Tropical Storm Danas at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, as airlines announced changes to their schedules for Sunday.

At 5 p.m., the storm was located 360 kilometer west-southwest of Taiwan’s southern tip, Eluanbi in Pingtung County. It was moving at a speed of between 10 and 20 kilometer per hour, heading north-northeast turning to northeast.

Maximum sustained winds near the center of the storm reached 23 meter per second, with gusts of up to 30 meter per second, the Central Weather Administration said.

Sea warnings for waters southwest of Taiwan had been in effect since Saturday morning. Forecasters warned of strong winds and heavy rain, especially on Sunday as the storm moved north over the Taiwan Strait. Danas was expected to reach the northern part of the strait west of Taipei on Monday before moving away from the country during the afternoon.

An extremely heavy rain advisory was in force for Nantou, Yunlin, and Chiayi County from Saturday evening to Sunday morning, the Central Weather Administration said.

The approach by the storm already made itself felt on the traffic situation Saturday. Ferry connections between the main island and outlying islands were going to be suspended on Sunday, but worsening weather conditions led ferry operators to end service between Pingtung and the island of Xiaoliuqiu Saturday afternoon, per CNA.

Airlines announced the cancellation of domestic flights for Sunday. However, Tigerair Taiwan said some of its international flights would be rescheduled, with flights leaving Taiwan early. The changes applied to flights between Kaohsiung and Okinawa and Tokyo, from Kaohsiung to Macau, and from Macau to Taichung, according to a CNA report.

Airlines cautioned travelers with flights booked for Sunday and Monday to keep a close watch on new developments and on the websites of airlines and airports.

So far all the cancelled flights are towards the CN, HK, KR, JPN directions.
