Keep watching the news on TV. Japan will issue statement for school closures etc. Trains will probably stop operating. Best to stay in hotel. Because if the speed and strength is like Haiyan, it is definitely serious business. I'd recommend either postpone the trip because there will be flight delays etc.

One thing is for sure, quite a bit of rain is going come down in Tokyo. Even if it does weaken, it's still quite a powerful storm at cat 2/3.

Hopefully it clears out before I fly next sun. Cannot cancel..any idea if the 7 day jr pass can be extended for free if there's no Shinkansen running etc on a particular day after I have activated it?

do inform ur hotel in advance in case of flight delay. Like what happened to my student, flight delay, then no dinner for them at Hakone. End up pay extra even nv eat dinner... I called the hotel then managed to help them save 3000 yen per person. Changed to free BF instead of free dinner...

Also hopefully it will not smash up Kyoto / Osaka / Nara / Kobe & their autumn leaves.

I experienced Typhoon Phanfone when it came to Tokyo. Was too busy to catch the news to know there's typhoon. I thought it's just heavy rain, accompanied by strong wind. Shinjuku JR was still as crowded with people during morning and evening peak hour.

There are many things you can do. E.g. Indoor shopping at shopping centers. I spent 1/2 day on streets of Harajuku, which is also very crowded. Japanese there seemed quite used to Typhoon. Guess it's pretty safe in Tokyo, as it's considered mainland with good drainage (i.e. no flooding).

Phanfone strength dropped a lot before hitting Japan so I guess we were pretty heng. Luckily my ghibli museum ticket for that morning wasn't wasted :)

If dont wanna be cooped up in the hotel, You could probably camp at round 1 sports amusement park and pay for the unlimited sports game provided theres no power shortage :p

Hi all , I'm going this coming Monday. Is it possible to claim travel insurance if I cancel this trip due to the tycoon? As it's pretty useless to stay inside the hotel room.
