Raising rent and splitting electricity bills, stabbed Hong 33 times, causing her death. In the first instance, the National Court sentenced him to life imprisonment for murder and other charges, with a six-month commutation sentence of a fine. The case was transferred to the Taiwan High Court today, which held a hearing and questioning session. Zhang claimed to be the victim, saying, "I'm 70 years old and I didn't kill anyone until now," and called Hong despicable, expressing regret for turning himself in.
Zhang Xueyi was brought to court today. Upon seeing the media, he stated that he was 70 years old and he didn't kill anyone until now. He said the landlady was despicable for taking his money, and cursed profanities. He said he regretted turning himself in, repeatedly shouting, "The judicial system is inherently unfair," and added, "Damn it, I'm also a victim. If she hadn't messed with me, I wouldn't have killed her."
In July 2024, Zhang Xueyi rented a small room from Ms. Hong for 6,000 yuan per month to live with his son. His relationship with Ms. Hong was already strained due to differences in lifestyle and schedules. In retaliation, Zhang opened the room's window and ran the air conditioning 24 hours a day, causing the electricity bill to skyrocket from over 1,000 yuan to over 10,000 yuan.
Ms. Hong demanded that Zhang share the increased electricity costs, but he refused. She then requested to terminate the lease and ask Zhang and his son to move out. Zhang demanded not only the return of his deposit but also a penalty for breach of contract, and continued to live in the room with his son, further escalating the tension between him and Ms. Hong.
On the morning of October 29, 2024, at approximately 8:00 AM, during another argument with Ms. Hong over the rent increase, Zhang took out a knife hidden in the closet and stabbed her 33 times in the head, neck, back, limbs, and body, causing her to suffer hemorrhagic shock and respiratory failure, resulting in her immediate death.
The New Taipei District Court's National Judges Division, in its first instance judgment, determined that Zhang Xueyi's control of his emotions had not significantly diminished after an evaluation. Although Zhang surrendered himself to the police, his attitude after the crime was poor. Therefore, no reduction of sentence was granted, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. He was also sentenced to six months imprisonment for illegal possession of a knife, which could be commuted to a fine. The case was transferred to the High Court today.
