Hi All!

I currently have a CGPA of 3.53 ( 5 Semesters) in Business Information Technology from Ngee Ann Polytechnic and would love to purse a business degree in UK universities. The following is a list of universities that I would love to enroll in.

1. London School of Economics (LSE)
2. University College of London (UCL)
3. King's College of London

Please help me and rate my chances of enrolling into any of these universities or is there any suitable universities that I can enroll into with my results.

Thank you very much!

LSE and UCL does not offer degree in business, unless you are referring to their management degree. your GPA is a bit low for LSE and UCL... I reckon you can give king's college a shot.

It will be difficult to rate your chances as it depends on the quality of students applying for the universities you listed. You will have to compete for a place with those students.

Do you have any portfolio or business-related experience which can strengthen your chances?

You may wish to consider UK degrees outside the "Golden Triangle UK", for example,
- you can look at popular ranking charts like QS and Times Higher Education for reference
- or apply to universities within Russell Group, a renown UK research group. :s22:

All of then a stretch. 3.5 only uni such as bath, Manchester, Durham as safety
Maybe Warwick a reach

I would fill in 2 stretch uni, 1 reach and 2 safety.

Then stretch and reach uni, u may not get and adv standing at all.

With that gpa u can try Canada say uni of Toronto, McGill, ubc sauder at most 1 semester adv standing. If u wish to stay u get to apply for 3 yr work visa easier to transfer to pr after u get job.

Of course your gpa can land in uofmelb or usdy and get a yr off easy.

Hi! From my experience, I can tell you that the 'tier 1' unis for business programmes won't consider your application. You may wish to try the tier 2 unis which you stand a very good chance (most ask for minimum 3.0 to 3.3 GPA). Tier 3 unis very high probability to enter. Didn't include the Scottish unis as they do not recognize SG Poly Diploma.

Tier 1: Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial
Tier 2: Warwick, Durham, Manchester, Bristol, KCL
Tier 3: York, Reading, Exeter, Birmingham, Lancaster etc

For specific courses, you may wish to email the respective unis' admission office to ask for their entry requirements.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding entry into UK unis, future employability etc. As a fellow NP Blk 72 alumnus I'd be happy to help!

Disclaimer: I do not mean to disparage any Unis by categorizing them into 'Tiers' but for the sake of simplicity, comparison and SGreans' facinination with 'brand names' I have decided to do so for this instance.

I am actually hoping to be able to enter any of the Tier 2 Universities in UK or University of Toronto in Canada to pursue a Management degree given that my cGPA isn't that great after all due to my horrible results in the first semester. Did you went to the UK for further studies after your diploma? If yes, which was it and how much did you get? Is it easy to stay on after you have completed your studies for employment there? There's a few concerns in mind that I have now.

1. Employment and remuneration rates for foreign students given that I hope to repay the bank loans in probably within 5 years upon graduation.

2. The ease of getting a work visa and subsequently converting to a PR over there.

3. The possibility of getting an adv. standing.

I also heard that personal statement is also required from your Lecturers/Tutors and the UK universities will also look at your CCA records/activities apart from just the academic results?

Lastly, some of the these business related courses, A-level Mathematics is also one of the entry requirements. How about poly students?

if u looking for 1yr of adv standing u can forget about canadian uni.
Uni renown in Biz in Canada say Queens, UWO Ivy (no 1st yr admission), Toronto rotman, UBC Sauder, Mcgill Desautels or York Schulich all have very similar admission standards.

regarding job opportunities there, there are 2 forumers here who grad recently from Sauder and found jobs in Vancouver area. personal reasons they returned. PR is easy to get with job offers.

UK - my poly friends who went to UK all returned, applying under tier 2 has not been easy. I have heard of ppl leaving early 1990s and found jobs in Eng&Sci, others did Msc at LSE returning to Asia in mid 2000.

remuneration not hard to google and get an idea. I am sure in big cities such as London one get paid more, the expenses are higher too.
Average graduate salary “£29,000″ (as long as you’re on a prestigious grad scheme)

Well Employment situation changes annually with any country U choose its a gamble u have to make.

loan - how much $, the entire fee and living expenses (~sgd$120k 2yrs or sgd$180K 3 yrs) in 5yrs?

u might wanna get an est on tax minus the expenses.

oh... Shayetet13 maybe in SG, U may wanna find out from quotient, I think he in UK just not started working
http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/d.../smu-biz-vs-ntu-bba-4638938.html#post84900855
Hi guys so moi gf got into SMU biz but she said she wanna apply for NTU biz cos NTU ish direct hons. I tell her SMU is more satki cos they use american system and employers seem to prefer the more 'outgoing' SMU grads (from what my friends tell me).

So what's the 'better' choice in terms of future employment, alumni network, earning power etc.

Anyone can advise?

you are not gonna get any concrete answers by asking them here. go and email your universities. some may advise you some will just ask you to apply officially through UCAS.

did you bother to look at the link i give you?

renowned and prestigious UK unis think highly of singapore and are aware of polytechnic diplomas. you will definitely get an offer. but bear in mind that you must write a good personal statement and the lecturer that writes you the referee report must support what you write about yourself.

i donnoe anything about bank loans cos i work like a dog doing two jobs prior to commencing my degree in uk. every year 4-5 months holiday i return to SG and work two jobs. so i cannot advise you on bank loans.

but something positive is that a growing number of UK unis have scholarships so go and research on them. some is automatic and some is not. what is automatic? if you are a international student some unis will give you 1,500 pounds scholarship for each year 1, year 2 and year 3. this simply means that its a tution reduction fee so if your fees per year is 10,000 pounds then you only pay 8,500.

non-automatic is where some unis offer you up to 3000 pounds for each year for good academic scores in your year 1, year 2, year 3.

i still think UK uni beats canada uni anytime.

when you arrive in UK apply for internships during your holidays. most singaporeans return to SG for holidays. but since you want to stay on in UK for job after you grad better go for internships.

if your degree is 3 years then you have 3 summer holidays. choose 3 different companies to do your internships. if you perform well the employer will remember you. if you want to work for them permanently then your past performance during your internship phase will come into play. you can look for some internships here.

Ah I may have overlooked Glasgow, Strathclyde, Edin when I was searching for Unis to apply to. The only scottish uni I felt worth applying to was St Andrews which does not accept Poly diplomas as an entry requirement.

Future employment - SG and UK. Employers in both countries hold very contrasting views on what they consider a 'good' or 'recognisable' school.

your post well constructed and info is accurate.

Unfortunately, no. I'll only be commencing UG study in Sept 2015 after NS :s13:

Where were you from?

No I haven't commenced UG study but have many relatives and friends who completed and came back. Have learnt a lot from their experience(s) overseas.

1. Employment and remuneration rates for foreign students given that I hope to repay the bank loans in probably within 5 years upon graduation.
3 years of course fees and expenses can easily set you back S$180k to S$200k (amount taken from a family member who graduated 2014 July). Lets take S$190k/5 = S$38k per year which is slightly above $3k a month excluding interest. A bit optimistic if you ask me.

2. The ease of getting a work visa and subsequently converting to a PR over there.
A quick check on the UK immigration website and you will get your answers.

3. The possibility of getting an adv. standing.
To get advanced standing in UK unis is not hard. Universities such as Surrey, Sussex, Reading and Leeds (list not exhaustive) will offer advanced standing with your current GPA. My advice however is to NOT do advanced standing if your finances are steady.

4. I also heard that personal statement is also required from your Lecturers/Tutors and the UK universities will also look at your CCA records/activities apart from just the academic results?
A reference from past teachers can be submitted during your UCAS application. Academic results remain the first cut, however. For example, 2 people are fighting for 1 spot in the uni with GPA of 3.0. External activities would then come into play here. Sadly (or not?), UK unis still place a high emphasis on academic results compared to US universities.

5. Lastly, some of the these business related courses, A-level Mathematics is also one of the entry requirements. How about poly students?
You may need to contact the admissions office of the university you are applying to directly. A person I know took the SAT 2 Subject Test in Mathematics to demonstrate his mathematics proficiency as he applied for Economics and got in.

Alternatively, if your GPA doesn't qualify you to a 'better' UK uni, you may wish to consider a foundation programme (Bellerbys College is one of the better ones). I know for a fact that Durham University's requirements for a Bellerbys Foundation Programme is a 67% overall with no subject falling below 65%. I have seen the exam papers and SG students will usually find it highly manageable - 85% and above is not uncommon among my friends who went through the programme.

if your degree is 3 years then you have 3 summer holidays. choose 3 different companies to do your internships. if you perform well the employer will remember you. if you want to work for them permanently then your past performance during your internship phase will come into play. you can look for some internships here.

2* summer holidays. 1st year to 2nd year and 2nd year to 3rd year :s13:

TS, either work during summer or attend summer school to network, get credits and gain exposure if finances are a non-issue. My humble $0.02.
