Hi guys,
had this problem with my mbp, unable to turn on my mbp at all. Tried a known good charger but still can't power up. Also tried all the recommended method found in google but to no avail.

Sent to service center but was told need 2 working days to diagnose. Anyone has encountered similar problem before? Is the motherboard of the mbp up lorry?

I assume you have done the basic troubleshooting of performing SMC + NVRAM reset.

Do you see any light on the power adaptor when connected to your MBP?

If you want to self troubleshoot, you can first try reseating the battery connector, that steps works for a lot of users who faced the same symptoms.

You can follow detailed instructions on https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_15"_Retina_Display_Mid_2014

What I believed happened is your battery has gone flat and the charging mechanism on the MBP failed.

Quite unlikely it has fried the logic board, probably just the magsafe board on the MBP itself.

The power conenctor light was amber when connected to mbp and after 1 hour of charging still amber.
Can't access the link you provided but I will go home and try again.

Any reason why it is unlikely to be fried logic board?

Your symptom sounds like a battery problem.

Reseating the battery connector will most likely fix it.

After doing so, you may want to install Coconut Battery to check if battery have any problems.

Logic board is the main component of the mac therefore it's made to last unless it's a manufacturing fault.

I've not seen any who does overclocking or things to mess up the logic board which usually caused by extreme heat on the hardware components(faulty cooling system).

The apple service guy commented the motherboard fried, quote S$1000 to change a new one. I'm very skeptical about it as this mbp is not under heavily usage and I didn't overclock it.

Is the MBP with you or the service center now? which service center?

no more warranty? if no warranty, please do not bring in to an AASP unless you're prepared to pay at least $100 for diagnostic/labour fee even though you don't wish to proceed with repair.

As I always said in this forum, before sending your mac for service, call Applecare to log a case and discuss charges first.

I'm ok with the diagnostic charges, but to replace the board for S$1000, this very pricey to me. Furthermore, the guy commented he confirmed motherboard is fried at the moment, but can not be sure with the SSD. If SSD fried, then have to pay another S$1000 for replacement. I'm seriously consider giving it up.

Which service center? What is your warranty status? Have you called AppleCare to discuss options?

The first thing you should be doing after given the quotation is to seek a solution from Apple direct instead of here.

Afterall their decision can override what the AASP quote you.

Here's a tip, call AppleCare, offer to split the cost of the repair. Tell them you're willing to pay for the repair but the cost of the logic board is way too expensive and if they are kind enough to split the cost.

After reviewing, best case scenario you don't have to pay a single cent, not the best is you pay for the labor cost which is about 100-200 bux. Worse case scenario, they reject you totally which is quite rare.

Reasons for exception: warranty ended not too long ago, amount of Apple Products you own and of course your earnest cooperation and willingness to split the cost and not expect a full exception.

Even if you have doubts with the diagnostics, an AppleCare Senior Advisor can investigate the issue and communicate with the AASP to get more details on the problem reported.

Sorry to hijack this topic.

The support for Apple is getting bad to worst. Even emails escalating to their CEO, Tim cook, could result their personnel to take 1 week to refollow up on the issue (which highly is being missed by their executive relation).

The point where Apple was helpful, it was way past history.

Comparing the level of service of a callcenter to other tech companies, i'm pretty confident AppleCare leads the pack, afterall they have been ranked top in consumer reports back to back for the previous years.

Do you know that the email you sent to the CEO will be filtered through many levels before you get a response?

The ER advisor that contacts you is assigned to the region you're at so most likely from Apple Asia HQ here in Singapore but I'm guessing between the CEO and the ER advisor assigned, it's so many different levels in between.

Not forgetting, these ER advisors are not technically trained therefore if you send a case with regards to a technical issue, it will then route back to the AppleCare team(Senior advisor) - back to square one. ;)

My friend helped me sent to Mac City for diagnostic, i think it's located in JB.
Received the quote today, total repair cost RM2040. The cost for logic board is RM1890.

I'm bringing the mbp back and sent to local service center. The engineer from Mac City commented they are sure the board failed, but not sure about SSD and the rest. If SSD failed, then have to pay more.

You have already got 2 diagnostics claiming the logic board needs to be replaced. Bring in to local service center also same price one.

Only way to get around cheaper is a repair exception from Apple.

For previous few years, the support was good. But not within last 2 years.

The last unpleasant incident happened on the last Nov, two different ERs have picked my case and yet the resolution is yet to resolve till date. 5 emails direct to Tim before Apple get serious in understanding my needs, before that, I was treated like a dirt. Every thing was no. They even refused to listen to what my problems and being persistence to close the case.

So, what is Apple good at? Making their brand as luxury item and the best part? we are treated like cash cow rather than a luxury customer

The repair program is for video issue which are caused by overheating GPU. Drop a call to AppleCare first before bringing in down to avoid paying for diagnostic fee if they checked your Mac is not eligible for that program.
