Hi all, am currently a NSF. Got offered Economics in Uni of Bristol, rejected by LSE and UCL My desired career is investment banking, and I do recognize the competitiveness of this industry. I have one more year which I can re-apply, would you take up the offer of UoB Econs, or reject it and re-apply to LSE and UCL?

My sibling did a double degree at NTU. First class honours. In investment banking now. Does the uni matter that much/to what extent?

Imo, reject it as Uob is a Semi-target and re-apply to LSE & UCL. You can also consider Warwick,Oxford,Cambridge as they are targets as well. Not saying you can't get into IB through a semi-target, just that it's more work and effort. Since you already know that IB is already competitive enough, being in a semi-target puts you in a disadvantage when the applicant to position is already 150:1. Uni matters A LOT. Investment banking is a relatively elitist industry as compared to others. But just wondering though what did your sibling study?

Uni name and classification of degree is impt with IB.
If u cannot get into UOL or LSE what’s your backup place?
Is IB your ultimate goal? UK your only choice?

If u open to options and $$ is there go Canada route or USA. Transfer more acceptable there. I can study in UBC okanagan and transfer to UNB Vancouver. Or do some CC and transfer to McGill or Toronto or even UCLA Econ. Of course gpa must be great!
Wanna go top uni must have great GPA, if u wanna pay donate millions

I do it based on the assumption that he got the grades required for UCL & LSE but didn't get in because of PS. If it's because of grades then i agree with you. He won't have a good chance of getting into the targeted unis for IBDs as Econs is highly competitive in UK (Oxford, Cambridge, UCL , Imperial, LSE and Warwick).

Another option he can consider is doing PPE instead of Econs. Some PPE required grades are lower than that of pure Econs.

I’m also taking the SATs, but AFAIK a 2nd tier US school like UCLB/Wash/Mich is still far more selective than UCL or LSE, my ECs are very weak and considering that I need financial aid for US, I’m not pinning much hope on my US application. My dream sch would by NYU though.. I’ve also actually researched on the CC route, but I realized it’s more for students with poor A lvl results or females with O’s.

Hi, I’m not applying to Oxbridge because I know where I stand and I know i’m not good enough for them. PPE in these targets is actually as competitive if not more because it’s known as a politician course. Your point is still great though, I don’t mind reapplying to these targets to a course like Philosophy/Politics/History and Econs. For etc, Pol&Econs at LSE is at 30% chance, straight Econs is 20%. It’s still risky though, I’ll be left with no schools if they reject me again.. But I understand you’re advising me to reapply?

Just to clarify your earlier post ah. UOL is a federal of universities, programmes under EMFSS is under the academic direction of LSE, your cert is still UOL. Therefore it's not the same as doing a degree at LSE per se.

You can do UOL degrees anywhere in the world, UK included since it originated from there. But to do LSE, it's only at UK.

Hi,

Using the figures with your assumption that you only got 30% Chance at PPE & 20% Chance at Econs in Target unis, I would suggest you just go for Bristol if you decided you want to study in the UK for sure. However, you will have to be realistic of your chances of getting into IBDs and not only be dead set in that industry.

This is based on the assumption that cost is not an issue. If cost is an issue or you are flexible studying in the UK/SG, in my opinion, you will have more chance studying in the big 3 here before taking your Masters in UK to get into the bigger market of IBDs. Do note for postgrad IBDs target it differs slightly.

I can't give you advice on other country universities on your chances or market as I don't have experience/knowledge so like some users advice, you should consider universities in other countries if you are flexible (provided you do your research).
