my friend's zenbook, use only few weeks then realize chassic keep shocking him. send to service center, more than 3 months liao still haven't get back. really terrible service, and i'm talking about the latest zenbook model. still say no parts to repair, have to wait for taiwan side to send parts over. if you don't have parts to repair for your latest ultrabook model something is seriously wrong.

But their UX32 jin chio leh...

aiyah chio no use
when it fails miserably, will rage quit and feel like throwing the laptop away

u need at least i7 quadcore processor for computation on a laptop
i5 on laptop will be too slow. (and yes i have personally verified this)

unfortunately the only i7 quadcore laptop that u can buy brand new only comes in the form of overpriced gaming laptops. that is the silly thing about how companies try to sell things to consumers nowadays

the cheapest i7 quadcore laptop brand new is aftershock 15 inch screen
price is 1500 bucks cheapest.

unless u dont mind 2nd hand laptop, then in which case u shld hunt for
one with 3rd gen i7 quadcore 3610qm (ivy bridge) . u can also try to find one with i7 2630qm (2nd gen sandybridge), but it may start to show some age unless its a very well maintained unit. probably can keep it as a spare laptop or run parallel jobs in addition to your main laptop

also u will need ssd as main drive to speed up the loading and running the computation programs
Hearing from my seniors, computation would be quite simple. An i5 would suffice my 4yrs candidature. I've got no intention of getting a 2nd hand laptop. I don't want to risk hardware failure and warranty etc. Maybe I could up my budget a little more if it's actually needed.

The ux303 is worth getting if only u can wait. Asus doesnt seem keen to bring in this model to local markets. Prob coming in ard oct-dec period to replace the UX302.

microsoft surface pro 3? reviews metioned it quite good, runs full windows and its weight makes it very portable too. have i5 and i7 variants but i7 cost above 2k i5 would suit ur budget though.

Is the i5 cpu power similar to that of the i5 of regular ultrabooks?

bought a u330p with i5, 8gb ram, and hybrid drive...

found it too slow when crunching data... so going to retire it to give my father use as youtube machine...

any recommendations for
1) i7
2) 16gb ram
3) SSD 128GB or 256GB
4) 13/14inch screen

No need DVD drive, no need dedicated gfx card... it there any machine that meets my needs @ $1xxx?
Another way is to upgrade to SSD drive for my u330p, but is there anyway I can go to do this? I dun have the OS so I totally have no idea how to get my win 8.1 from the hybrid drive out...

see my post @ #5
u shld have gotten i7 quadcore in the first place
let me emphasize again: laptop i5 2 cores will always be too slow for serious scientific calculations. and it will overheat more quickly than laptop quadcore i7. on a separate note, there is a high chance that TS (kingsfall) may come back and lament that he made the wrong choice by buying i5 laptop (lol)

best bet u can get is aftershock 15" laptop
price $1500 cheapest
sept 2014 IT show they shld have some promos, go to bootstrike.com check the jpg flyers have a look

bro like i mentioned earlier my graphic design would be very minimal (1mod) im not doing fvcking any scientific calculations you can rest on that. i dont need such a gigantic processing power. just a i5u and a 2gb dedicated gpu.

what i need is touchscreen, light as well as good battery life with i5 and 2gb dedicated gpu features

erm pardon my poor english..i don't know whats a computation
you enrolled in mechanical engineering course i assume you will be rendering works in programs like autocad/proe etc
if you are looking for lightweight laptops which usually comes with intel graphics,im not sure whether it can handle rendering but goodluck you can try

From wad I see, it is worth it, considering the 3 years local on-site + 3 years carry-in warranty. And for most part of the warranty u dun need to go down to Burn Road for warranty, just send your laptop in at LT27.

But think carefully if u really can take the 256GB SSD. From my experience, 256GB SSD runs out of space really quickly, and u need an external HDD for storage. I'm running my UX32LN on 512GB SSD, and i've already used up 50% of space. If u dun need the SSD, consider the cheaper models. The i5 model comes with free 750GB external HDD anyway. :)

This is agree. Unless you really need those horses from an i7 (but then Ultrabook i7 are kinda meh anyways), better to get lower spec and harvest savings into higher cap SSD

thanks for ur views!!! I going to do some mental sums to check ig 256GB is sufficient... so far i only used up 60Gb including OS...
