Unisim or Kaplan???

Hi all,


I am in the midst of making the decisions between Kaplan Business & Marketing course under Murdoch or Unisim Marketing course.

Could anyone advise me which school is better? Or are they the same?

Unisim

SIM University is the only private university in Singapore and is highly funded by the government. You can get to enjoy 55% subsidy.

Moreover, it is announced that SIM University has been selected to house Singapore's third law school, so I think it does speak volumes about the direction of where the school is heading.

Kaplan

Fastest route to get a degree. Advisable only if you are holding on to a decent job and you just need that cert to get a promotion or advancement and you don't wish to invest more of your time because of your other commitments. Frankly speaking, the course duration 1.5 years is too short. Judging merely at this point, it puts you in an unfavourable position when it comes to job compeitition with the local grads where their courses are typically 3-4 years.

Of course there is still many other pros and cons to weigh in.

Ultimately it also boils down in which sector do you want to work in.

Any advice?

4 years for unsim and 2 years for for kaplan.

Does it mean that if I go for kaplan, it's difficult for me to find job in the future?

To be honest, I dont think employers differentiate between unisim and kaplan at the moment. To them its just local vs D. Pretty sure Unisim is under DL. I'd go for 2 years in Kaplan, get my degree and start to gain working experience.

Both degree will not get you into highly desirable graduate schemes. What are you looking to get into? Marketing after your degree? If so, I'd definitely recommend the Kaplan over Unisim. End of day, its just a piece of paper to get you started in your career.

I think you're confused between UniSIM and SIM GE. SIM GE is the DL wing of SIM, while UniSIM is considered local degree.

TS, if you wish to work in the government/civil service, highly recommend you go for UniSIM; it's definitely more recognised there as compared to Kaplan.

Agreed with the 2nd post; go with Kaplan only if you have secured a job and require a degree to progress in your career.

I know now they have regarded unisim as a local uni now. But in the eyes of employer, i don't think they differentiate between unisim and all the other dl degrees.

civil service like mas and edb still prefer the big 3 local uni. Although unisim is now regarded as local uni, its still not on par with the other 3. The only perk i can think of for unisim is the subsidies for the degree.

actually. end of day, its not where u do ur degree but your attitude and experience that differentiate yourself from the rest.

I would go for unisim. I see more potential in unisim than PSB or any other DL degree provider here. SMU only took about 8 years to be on par with NUS/NTU in terms of local recognition after it gained local status. Same thing could happen with unisim now that it has government backing, no one predicted SMU's rise, look at it now. But that will never happen for PSB.

On top of that, you will have more chance to get into civil service. MAS and EDB are damn competitive to get into in the first place. You'd still have a better chance if you're trying to get into other stat boards. Think long-term. 2 year degrees will hardly be accepted for masters or further studies. Look at the requirements for NUS/NTU masters, some of them even explicitly state that you need a '4-year' degree.

I do know distance learning degree holders from Kaplan's UCD &Swinburne and SIM's RMIT & UOL doing master's in NTU.

Sure unisim has more potential. But in 8 years time, nobody would care where u grad from.
