----------------------------------------
Dear student,

We are forwarding you an email sent out by UOL to students who took Statistics 1 examination on 7th May 2015. Please read the following:

Dear Mr/ Miss

Re: Statistics 1 examination

Further to our earlier message regarding the error within the Statistics 1 examination paper, we write to provide an update and important additional information for those students who sat this exam on 7 May 2015.

The Examiners for Statistics 1 have now met to consider and determine the assessment of the course, in the light of the omission of the statistical tables. The examination papers have been thoroughly reviewed. The difficulties and complexities that candidates would have encountered as a result of the missing tables have been carefully collated and considered. These difficulties are diverse and numerous.

Following this review, unfortunately, we must report that it will not be possible to accurately and appropriately assess the Statistics 1 examination held on 7 May 2015. The Examiners are unable to allocate marks in accordance with the specified criteria. The paper, which is flawed as a result of the missing tables, does not provide a fair test of candidates’ abilities and proficiency in this course. In order to maintain the integrity and standards of both the course and the award, regrettably, this examination has been declared null and void.

I am very sorry indeed for the inconvenience caused as a result of the invalidation of this examination. The news will be extremely disappointing to you and I offer my sincere apologies. The University will undertake a thorough review of the procedures surrounding the production of examination papers, to ensure this error does not recur.

All candidates who sat the Statistics 1 paper on 7 May 2015 will therefore be required to sit an examination for this course again. Please can I ask you to read the following points carefully with regard to the replacement exam:-

• The attempt made on 7 May 2015 will not count and will not appear on your student record.

• The examination will be held again on the afternoon of Thursday 28 May 2015.

There will of course be no entry fee for the replacement examination on 28 May. Your local fees will be met by the University. The University will either pay your local centre directly, or reimburse you, or provide a credit on your account for the fees you pay to sit the examination at your local centre.

You will automatically be entered for the Statistics 1 examination at the same centre at which you sat on 7 May 2015. We will make the arrangements with the examination centre directly. If you wish to sit at an alternative centre, please contact the University, as detailed below. We will assist you to make these alternative arrangements.

You will be sent another admission notice for this examination no later than 22 May.

If you are unable to sit on 28 May, an alternative date of Wednesday 3 June 2015 will also be made available, naturally with a different examination paper. If you cannot sit on 28 May, please contact the University, as detailed below, and we will make arrangements for you to sit on the morning of 3 June.

You are urged to try to take the examination on one of these dates but, if that turns out to be impossible, an alternative date for the replacement exam will be provided. This alternative date will be identified as soon as we possibly can. You may proceed with your studies as intended, and sit the exam at the later specified date.

Candidates who are unable to sit the replacement examination on 28 May, 3 June, or the later date yet to be confirmed, may sit the paper again in May 2016. Again, there will be no entry fee for the replacement exam. Candidates in this position may proceed with their studies as intended, sitting the paper next year.

There is a lot of information in this message and you will have other questions as well. If you have any questions that you would like to ask, please contact us via the “Ask a question” tab in the Portal. Within the Portal you will find a list of Frequently Asked Questions entitled “Statistics 1 Examination”, which should also assist.

We are sorry that the delivery of the examination service has failed on this occasion. The standards of the University of London award must be maintained and the University has a duty to ensure that all candidates are assessed equitably and in accordance with the published criteria. However, this does not reduce the inconvenience caused and we offer again our sincere apologies.

Yours sincerely

Timothy Wade

Which institution is this? This is very unprofessional to miss out such a crucial document in the exam.
