Wa lao eh...if announced end of year and launch jan of 2022 then this ampere is really short lived generation...

The question is whether Nvidia will be using TSMC 5nm or some like a Samsung 6nm which is a refined 7nm. If they persist in using lower cost nodes, then 5nm may be used for their deep learning GPUs like how they are doing now.

Considering Apple has fully booked out 5nm with TSMC, it’s almost impossible to see 5nm products from AMD and Nvidia in early 2022. Inventory takes time to build up.

I feel the benefits of setting up shop in Singapore are,
1. Political stability,
2. No natural disaster
3. Centralised for hiring in South East Asia.

Setting up a hub does not always mean hiring all locals. But in doing so may benefit some locals because you can’t setup shop here and avoid hiring locally. That’s illegal unless you can prove otherwise that locals are not suited for the roles.

Just as you mentioned yourself, there is a quota to hit before they can hire overseas. Isn't it better than people not having enough jobs? Or you prefer people that lost their jobs to do Grab? Just because you have a job, you may not observe how bad the job market is now.

Anyway, I doubt TSMC will expand in Singapore, so let's stick to the topic.

TSMSC definitely no plans to setup shop in reddot, they are going japan this year... to score some brownies point for taiwan to enter CPTPP....

Lets wait&see, it only takes a richter 7.1 scale earthquake near the surface... plant shutdown and late delivery penalty pile-up... until they jialat jialat...

it just a matter of "when"... the seismic platonic pressure has been building up for the pass 10yrs... anytime it could release the pressure.... that's how nature works....

The companies can call their process node whatever they like, doesn’t necessarily have to correspond to actual node size. Like how TSMC’s 7nm isn’t strictly speaking 7nm, any company can iterate on this 7nm++++++ and call it 2nm. Unless someone has figured out how to successfully make electrons flow properly using a 2nm gate in the PNP transistor?

Singapore land expensive, electricity expensive, and 3rd world labor. Might as well just go set up factory in India.

Singapore already has few semi conductor plant. GlobalFoundries, ST, SSMC etc.
I believe SSMC in under TSMC.

The SD888 and the Huawei 9000 SoC is 5nm anyway.
