Ok....my company got this super old pc....hdd 40gb.....my boss asked me whether can change to bigger capacity.
1. I open up to check and appears can only take in IDE HDD.
2. Suppose can get IDE, how to clone? Can use the secondary ide which is connected to cd rom?

Where can get ide drives?

Please dun ask me to dump the pc n get a new one....i would very much like to but the pc is connected to a couple of equipments.

Appreciate help.

Use cable select jumper for both and u can use on same ide ribbon

The motherboard likely cannot detect too high capacity.

Alternatively buy pci to sata card

IDE... now that's a term I haven't heard in a long time...

Go SLS confirm can get...

Can use secondary IDE to crone... usually just take those IDE-to-USB cable to crone... also get from SLS

Check how big the motherboard can take, don't later buy 250GB show up as 137GB... although it doesn't really matter now does it

What OS is this system running ??

Very old PC and hardware liao if still got IDE onboard..this PC gonna die sooner or later liao

Better backup all the data n den upgrade to current gen of hardware... u can buy a PCI-E x1 IDE card n u can re-use the IDE HDD liao...

If not u can try VMware p2v tool and try to convert the phyiscal PC into a VM n run it in ESXI too...

you can try to get a IDE to SATA converter if you want bigger HDD.

But do check whether your mobo or Window OS can support much bigger HDD, esp the standard HDD capacity now is about 1TB.

IDE HDD is a technology last seen maybe 10 years ago. During that time, was there 1 TB IDE HDD?

And do the BIOS and WinXP have any trouble recognizing HDD above certain capacity?

You need to research a bit.

This model should have a single SATA port using i865G chipset with 48bit LBA support. Technically, you can use almost all SATA drives in the market currently. There are exception of SATA HDDs not support due to hard coded SATA2/3 support only.

Buy a 500GB SATA HDD to be safe, unlike you need another upgrade with the 500GB.

Hi commach, i only spotted the primary n secondary ide connectors...didnt see any sata connector.
Do you have the mobo layout? Im concerned there might be different versions to this model.

Is the motherboard P4SD?

There is another version using i845 chipset, this model no native SATA port.

I was using one of their D530 10+ years ago, I upgraded the 40GB PATA HDD to a 80GB SATA drive (Norton Ghost to clone the drive) using the single SATA port on the motherboard.

Even if you can find an IDE drive, its not gonna come cheap.

Understand that the PC is connected to a few equipments, but you know the time will come eventually to replace it.
