Upgrade Motherboard Before Upgrading RAM?

Hi folks,

Here's my current setup:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 @ 3.60GHz
GPU: GTX 1070
Motherboard: MSI B85-G43 GAMING
RAM: Ripjaw DDR3 (2 x 4GB)

I am looking to upgrade my RAM so that I can play games like Warzone, which seem unplayable with the RAM that I currently have. I am looking to up my RAM to 16GB, but I have been told that the newer DDR4 RAM is incompatible with my motherboard.

Which begs the question, do I first upgrade my motherboard and then get my RAM or do you guys think that I can get away with just upgrading my RAM without getting a new motherboard?

Sorry if this is awkwardly phrased as I'm not too informed about this subject.

If u upgrade ur motherboard, what are the option u will be buying??
Ur current setup is is lga 1150 socket, for ur current cpu
and lga 1150 only support up to ddr3 rams

So in my opinion, if u still wish to use ur setup, the only option is to expand ur rams

Or to change a whole new setup, really depends if ur pocket hav spare cash

Cheapest option is to get second hand ddr3 rams from HWZ Bazaar or even Carousell, usually rams are built to last so warranty should not be a major concern.

Sounds like the right candidate to do a complete refresh,.. AMD Ryzen 7 would be highly recommended

I suggest you quickly sell off the existing CPU+MB+RAM since there is still demand and switch to Ryzen 3300X + MSI B550 Tomahawk + 2X8GB DDR4-3200 when stocks for the CPU+MB arrive in the next few weeks

Thanks for the reply. If I upgrade my motherboard, I will be considering the B550 motherboards, because I feel like my old ass motherboard is due for a proper upgrade.

Thanks for the advice, will be upgrading my CPU first, and maybe wait for reviews on the B550 motherboards, before proceeding to upgrade my RAM.

Thanks for the input guys! Will be upgrading my CPU to a Ryzen R3-3300x, my motherboard to one of the new b550 motherboards that are coming out, and I think I'll get my RAM from Corsair.

I would seriously look for a higher spec Ryzen since your coming from an i7. Perhaps a Ryzen 7 3700X is what I would be heading for to see some real improvement against your existing i7 system. An upgrade isnt an upgrade if your not seeing some "real" performance boost!

This does increase the budget a fair bit but its what I would do.

got money upgrade everything. If on a budget just upgrade memory to 16gb

Just remember that the RAM will not be forward compatible so it will be money burnt!

Next year is ddr5 with AM5 socket.. so even if ddr4 also will be outdated.

Yes but you have to remember that DDR4 came out in 2014 so there will be a good few years of DDR4 overlapping DDR5 before you can say its truly outdated!

I have on hand gen 1 i7 875k to i5 7600k for intel. I stop caring which gen etc and having fun like playing with rgb and emulators like dophin etc
