Upgrade RAM

I have an old PC (7 years old) and lately it is very slow. Not sure if this is due to e Window 10 upgrade. I am trying to squeeze more life out of it before I change to a new PC.

When I look at the task manager, I noticed that the disk is almost always running at 100% . Hence I plan to upgrade my HDD to a SSD (I posted some questions in a separate thread).

I also noticed that my RAM is running at a very high rate (80+ to 90+%). While this is not usually the bottleneck I am think of upgrading the RAM as well. My current RAM is 1x2G DIMM @1066MHz. My CPU is a i5 750@2.67Ghz

Q1) Is it ok to replace the Ram with 2x4 GB DDR3 1333mb RAM?
Q2) Do I place them in slot 1 & 3, or slot 1&2?

Q1&2) whats the mobo u using? need to see what's their supporting range. if u still have your mannul den we can see what u can upgrade.

At 2GB, your memory pages are swapping in and out of memory to HDD, slowing your whole PC down.

As to your questions, depend on your MB as per below post.

New RAM is expensive now. I suggest you buy second-hand at $40 to $50 for 2X4GB.

I don't think upgrading your ram is going to fix your PC being slow. It sounds like your HDD is filled up with too much crap and mechnical HDDs tend to deteriorate in performance over time. Personally my PC is also around 7 years now, my HDD died on me on the 5th year or so. I stuck with Win 7 so I can't comment on Win10 performance.

You could either simply reformat your current HDD, or upgrade it to an SSD and keep the HDD for media storage etc. Don't need to replace parts unless they are faulty.

My rig is a Dell Inspiron 580 Desktop. I do not have the handbook anymore. When I google, it appears that it is ok to use 8GB of DDR3 1333mhz. But one site suggest only using 4x2GB as the max where others said it is fine to use up to 4x4GB.

Where can I get second hand RAM? I though the older model RAM like the DDR3 1333mhz are quite cheap (around $50 for 2x4G?).

If you can find new 2X4G of DDR3 at $50, then you should grab it. However, do note that DDR3 prices have nearly doubled over the past few months.

4x4GB is indeed fine for nehalem.

ok just checked that u can only have max 8GB in your system so u have have 4x2GB or 2x4GB

I have the same cpu as you and I can play all the latest games at medium to high settings 60fps like BF1. Look at my sig.

I see that you have 4 x 2G DDR3 1333 RAM configuration.

I will try to buy the 2G RAM in SL if it is still available. Else I will go for 2 x 4G DDR3 1333 RAM config and hope that it works. Thanks.

I don't think your mb will support 2x4GB module.
if you have 4 slot max 8gb, then you need to go and find 2GB module.
Also, be careful about the memory configuration. (single side/double side thing)

Best if you can bring the desktop to SLS and let them plug the ram for you.

Now is the worst time to get brand new rams... pricing are still increasing and shooting through the roof. Get 2nd hand from the buy sell here or carousell.

P.S: Try to get those lifetime warranty rams like Cosair and Kingston for worry-free RMA.
