Could any seniors on this forum suggest the next, most important, incremental upgrade to my setup?

Would love to do 27" 1440p one day but I know it's a huge leap.

I do light gaming (SFV) and Matlab, nothing too intensive.

What's your budget? You left to upgrade CPU but will end up needing new Mobo and RAM. RAM prices too high, best to wait it out...

I would suggest MB+CPU+DDR4 upgrade.

If you want something incremental (and DDR4 is expensive ATM), then a used Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge CPU+MB will allow you to keep the RAM.

Thanks all for the suggestion:s12:

I'm thinking getting second hand Ivy Bridge from Carousell actually, but CPU is not critical for performance right? :s11: At least for now. Most games should run quite well at 1080p on i5-750.

How about getting a good 1440p monitor first, running games at 1080p maxed out, 1440p for everything else. Then wait out for a big overhaul (CPU + Mobo + GFX ; because I don't think GTX 1060 3gb runs 1440p very well).

Depending on what you play, a GTX 1070 is the only graphic card that can handle all games smoothly currently @ 1440P.

All games? Maxed out settings or moderate settings? Thanks in advanced. Then I think I should have just gone with 1070. Just recently upgraded from 5770 to GTX 1060.

The next big leap will be a VR headset and a VR pad
So you can Hadoken & Shoryuken that Medc via real life movements.
Not sure how're ya gonna do Spinning down kick though.,...

Seriously, the next leap will be a system change but there is no need for that unless you are playing other games

SFV is not that intensive so unless it moves into the VR landscape.....

:s13: How to slowly work my way up to 1440p glory though. Nothing short of a big system overhaul it seems. So expensive sia :s22:

There is no need for 1440P glory
seriously
FHD is sufficient coz graphic cards yet to catch up...

tmfwy you using gtx1060 with 4k monitor? You normally game 28"/1080p? Is it really that bad?
I have quite a number of monitors and quite a number of graphic cards

3840x1080 <= You can probably guess which monitor uses this resolution
3840x2160
2560x1440
2560x1080
1920x1080

So far its very hard to discern the benefits of 4K in gaming except to boost graphic card sales. Dunno why its needed when there is amining craze...

There was a tangible difference from SD toHD and then FHD. One can clearly see the difference
From 640x480 => 800x600 => 1024x768 => 1280x1024 => 1366x768 => 1600x900 => 1920x1080

Difference is easily seen

From 1920x1080= > 2560x1440= Graphic card works slightly harder GTX1070TI is sweetspot here
From 1920x1080 => 3840x2160 = Graphic card works harder. GTX1080TI is nice to have

Depending on what games you are playing there is little 4K offers except bragging rights. Things look sharper but nothing sharpening textures via PP can't solve in modded games like Fallout4 / Skyrim. VR is an entirely different matter though....

1080p on 4k screen has good scaling of 1:4. 1080p on 1440p is some weird half ass scaling and might look bad

In theory, yes. In reality, no.

1080p on a 4k screen is like playing at 480p on a 1080p screen, or playing at 720p on a 1440p screen. Doesn’t matter even if it is 1:4 perfect scaling, it just feels pixelated playing at this resolution settings.

1440p on a 4k monitor and 1080p on a 1440p monitor would feel less of a resolution loss, even if the scaling is not perfect. At least the drop in resolution isn’t that pronounced and u still feel as if u using the native resolution.

Grab a monitor and go test it out for yourself. Theory just doesn’t cut it for this situation.

1920x1080 at 2560x1440 = Very hard to tell the difference
2560x1440 at 3840x2160 = Very hard to tell the difference
1920x1080 at 3840x2160 = MOre like playing 1600x900 on a 1920x1080

Depends on monitors. Watching 1080P movies on a 4k screen is less pronounced than watching 720P movies on a 1080P screen. Some loss but not so much

UNLESS you have golden eyes or are into pixel peeping in Lighroom / Photoshop....

I would say the right time to jump onto the 4K bandwagon is
1. When you feel that you need 4K; OR
2. When mid range graphic cards, can game comfortably in 4K; OR
3. When 4K monitors drop below the $300 price point.

I gather (from the response I'm getting) scaling probably not an issue.

Main factor (I feel):
1. How big is your screen.
2. How far away you sit from monitor.

At 27in, sitting 1m away from monitor, I think 1080p max settings with all the textures and lighting should be good enough :s13:

Nowadays, 1440p, 27in IPS also not cheap. If 144hz, we just beginning to see around $900 price range (with free sync or V sync).

GTX 1080 TI AMP finally arrived

Hooked it up to a Philips BDM4065UC 40" 4K

First try PUBG @ 4K res
>60fps mainly High / Ultra @ 4k

Things are noticeably sharper,
Hair is more detailed
Its like someone switched on 8x MSAA
On a large screen, 40", things are more noticeable than on a small 28" 4K screen. ON a 28, i seriously can't see the diff.

If budget is not an issue, i would put quality in over 144hz.
But if one is playing FPS, 144hz matters more.
Either way, one may still be looking at a high end gfx card for the moment..
