upgrade SSD

just a question, my laptop has 2 hard drives. got 20gb SSD for boot up and 1TB for windows and files. can i upgrade my 20gb SSD?

i called ACER, they said not possible. just asking for alternatives. not sure if it has something to do with their config or i can tweak a bit. currently i cannot see this SSD under "My Computer". I can only see it in BIOS.

could it be that it is using a hybrid drive? a 1TB w/ 20GB SSD cache (all on 1 harddisk).

check the specs, I believe that should be the case as SSD usually smallest would be 64GB.


and the reason why u cannot find it on "my computer" is that it is being used as a cache. Meaning it handles constantly used software and stores it on the SSD automatically

For most acer models, the 20GB SSD is soldered on board. It is not replaceable.

How hopeless answers you got. Hold your horse before jumping into conclusion.

Why you need an alternative SSD? Mainly it is used at 1. Boot time, 2. Application caching.

In a nutshell, SSD run ideally 1000 times faster than hard drive. It can help you reduce harddisk I/O and hence overall computational speed is faster.

1. Boot time. The better question is does your laptop boot within 10~30 seconds? If yes, it should already been "Configure" to boot with SSD. Usually it is done by the boot partition locate at SSD. You can search youtube video how to do it using free software.

2. Does "launch time" and "run time" ultra fast for your application. You could compare to non-SSD similiar in same spec. Or test it with some 3D games with high spec laptop you have.

SSD doesn't solve all the problem. It only help for the traditional harddisk bottle neck. And traditional harddisk bottle neck is why your application is so slow no matter how many CPU you add in.

The short answer is you have a hybrid drive. You have the best of both world by having fast disk to boot and run. And good partition for permanent storage. What you are looking for should be how to configure it, not doing exchange.
