upgrading from core i3-3220?

I was wondering if there are still cpus that we can buy to drop-in replace the core i3-3220? Or have we progressed to a much later generation already? I need a bit more speed for editing potos.

Check out carousell or hwz garage sales section. Sure got 2nd hand of that gen. Get an i5 it's gonna be faster significantly.

Ivy Bridge. Intel 3rd gen. Socket LGA 1155.

Any i5/i7-3XXX are all 3rd gen, up to the highest end for socket 1155 is i7-3770K. Any i5/i7 of that number and lower than that are all usable for you.

You can buy a second-hand i7-2600/K or i7-3770/K for 4C/8T. About $140-160 and $180-230 respectively.

what about heat generation? do the i5 and i7 put out a lot more heat? I can feel a lot of hot air from the i3 already when doing photoshop work (no air con, using a big fan cooler)

Get the 3770s instead of 3770. Low tdp = lower heat. I also hunting for one at reasonable price.

Depends on workload. If u keep loading all your cores at 100%, of course give out a lot of hot air la.

Also, upgrade your RAM if need be. Software like Photoshop love to throw stuff onto the RAM, so u might still face lag even if u have capable processor. Usually 8-16GB RAM will do, unless the raw photo itself is super huge in file size and image resolution.

Certainly hotter when compared to the i3 but not really a problem.

I have my i7-2600 in a SFF with stock HP heatsink and it ran fine on full load doing video encoding, though the top of the casing got a bit warm. My previous i7-3770 in the same rig was similar in terms of heat output.
