I asked this some months back, but seems like must put into action.

Although power trips are not THAT frequent, but really when it strikes it strikes.. Just kana again. It's twice in like 2 months. Everything (DAC, Speaker, PC, Monitor, CD player) all gone except my laptop (the only equipment on battery).

Any thing to look out for when purchasing one and is it really very noisy ?

Get any apc online mode model... do calculate ur total wattage with around 15-25% extra... for the ups

P.S.
The one I bought are apc rack mount 10000va online models for my servers.

Battery every 3-5yrs need to replace also. Otherwise it will also deplete and your "holding" time will be shorten.

Place it some where with Gd ventilation. Can be quite warm... mine is rack mount type with fans so quite noisy sometimes.... smaller consumer version should be quieter...

I'm using APC Back-UPS Pro BR900GI for my NAS.

It's rated at 540Watts / 900VA, providing enough time to trigger my power back on during a power outage and if it's a prolonged outage then the NAS also has enough time to turn itself off.

When buying a UPS, make sure the total power draw of all your devices that are connected to the UPS during operation doesn't go above the rated Watts of your UPS.

Also get sufficient capacity in case you need more time to switch off your devices during an outage.

http://www.apc.com/shop/sg/en/products/APC-Power-Saving-Back-UPS-Pro-900-230V/P-BR900GI

Edit: Not noisy when there is electricity, it only starts to get a bit noisy when you have an outage and it kicks into battery operation or during charging after a power outage.

So far I have not encountered this but I read that the main reason for a noisy UPS is when the internal fan kicks in during battery operation to cool the internals.

Are you able to identify the reason and source for tripping?

Ermm.. always kana during thunderstorm. Whole house tripped. Is that considered a reason (root cause) or is there some precaution I can take to prevent such incident.

Last time I had similar problem. Bought an APC BR800I. Later whole house re-wire including all the points and breaker. Now so far so good.

What is to be protected from? A blackout? Or hardware damage. Those are completely different events.

UPS is temporary and 'dirty' power so that electronics operate during a short blackout. UPS does not claim to protect from destructive surges. Read its spec numbers. Any recommendation without numbers is best ignored. How many joules does that UPS claim to absorb? Hundreds? Hardware destructive surges can be hundreds of thousands of joules. Where is this protection?

Near zero joules in a UPS is enough to claim 100% protection - to consumers who ignore numbers.

Something completely different is necessary for hardware protection. UPS does not even claim to provide hardware protection - if making a decision base in numbers. UPS is temporary power during tripping - a short blackout.
